Key bother

Postby greedoniz » Jan 17th, '06, 15:46

I recently bought an effect called Archangel by The Enchantment which is a key routine involving several stages to the routine such as mentalism, key bending and a key flight.
Unfortunately no keys are actually supplied with the trick itself and many will be needed in order to practice and perform.
In the instructions themselves it tells you to ask at a local key cutters for scrap keys and usually you are able to either pick them up for free or at a greatly reduced price.
I have now been to several key cutters and had several odd conversations about me asking for a load of knackered keys. In each place I have been told the same thing, "we rarely have scraps as the machinery rarely goes wrong".
I would have like to write a review about this but dont think I can fairly judge it as I am unable to even practice it.
I could buy un-cut ones but at £3 a key and one key being bent each performance it could be a rather pricy enterprise especially for a routine that is designed to be an impromptu pocket trick when you are put on the spot. Anyone got any ideas on what I can do or shall I just confine this one to the unwanted drawer to collect dust and to lament on another tenner down the drain?

Daft as it sounds, eBay comes to the rescue in these situations...

I've found old stamps, old keys, all sorts...

Ebay is a cracking idea! cheers

they dont seem to have the kind I'm looking for but I'll keep an eye out. Unfortunately I need yale keys (some of which have a long elongated hole rather than a round one). This Archangel routine is a right pain
Weirdly I've never used Ebay before

I don't have the routine so I don't know what type of keys are necessary but a quick ebay search gives:

http://tinyurl.com/7zrad (not all Yale though)

http://tinyurl.com/9ereb (comes with free lock!)

http://tinyurl.com/7klgb (25 blanks for £5)

Thanks again but I'm afraid I need some with an elongated hole in which the keyring would go.

I've been scouring ebay to no avail. I will keep an eye out but it is looking like a wasted few quid with that trick.
I even have friends and family elsewhere in the country checking out key cutters.
So advice to people thinking of buying this trick, check your local keycutter first.

Forks are not hard to find - go to a local Wal-Mart or similar and look in the cheapo aisles - in Asda they come in a packet of four and are very bendy.

Thanks for that offer Dat I have Pm'ed you my address and am staggered at the generousity of this site both in gestures such as this and the willingness to share knowledge too.
Cheers

I agree on the forks thing. I've gone through countless numbers of asdas cheap brand forks. And you get very strange looks from cash out peeps when you arrive witha basket full of about 60 forks. Sometimes it's a conversation you just dont want to have

I manage the security of 150 buildings and have recently had all of the front door locks changed. Imagine the number of old keys with an average of 10 key holders per building :?

Forks for the Liquid Metal routine have been discussed in the LM threads at length.

I've found that the best by far are the Asda Smart Price forks (a four pack for 97p) but I've also heard that the Tesco ones are also good.

Wilkinson forks look the same as these but I've found that they tend to be very brittle and snap when putting in the corkscrew twist. The others don's and are nice and soft.

hmm, problem for me is that i cant find any walmart type store near where live...

but i did some google searching and found strebler's forks (domion forks) sold places, and i think strelber sells ready made forks on his website (corkscrew twist) and just normal dominion forks. i think they are about the same price.
