An interest in close-up

Postby shanester » Jan 19th, '06, 15:17

Hi,
I have been into magic a relatively short time (just under 3 years) but when I was bitten by the bug I go it big time. I am old school insomuch as I prefer learning from books rather than vids and for a while had an huge appetite for magic books.
I started with an interest in table magic (George Schindler's book, then Bill Tarr) and finally found Bobo's. I fell for coin magic in a big way and spend ages looking for a copy of CoinMagic which I eventually had to get shipped from the States (and then it was reprinted 6 months later- a good lesson to learn).
I soon discovered that my distrust of cards was ill founded after getting some good responses from effects from Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book, and so I have increased my interest to all things Close Up.
I fell out of love with coins temporarily as I felt that there wasn't much motivation behind a lot of coin magic (it was just "look at me!" magic). I've since discovered some things (such as the Charming Chinese Challenge and Gadabout Coins Revisited) that have restored my faith.
I have come to realise that a routine should have interactive as well as spectator magic and that it is all in the flow!

Looking forward to some good discussions

See you around

Hi and welcome to TM m8 :D

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Dean,
the Charming Chinese Challenge is a 3 coin and ribbon routine by Troy Hooser from his book Destroyers but also sold as a stand alone DVD. The coins I use are from www.themagicianscoin.com and I got the remilled set as I am working on some edge grip/ mutobe palm/ web grip stuff (nowhere near performance level yet) and the milled edge is great. I use a presentation loosely based on one provided by Raymonde Crow in the book As The Crow Flies, the routine being called and based around a Chinese Pickpocket.

Gadabout Coins Revisited is a Ron Bauer effect and you can get it from RB directly at www.thinklikeaconjurer.com for $10. A lot for a single trick, but you get more than just a trick. You get a whole performance script and the thinking that goes with it. I love these. The effect is based on the effect in Bobo's - The Gadabout Coins which incidentally was one of the first coin tricks I learned (although I did it poorly back then). This version is very magical, very interactive, far from knucklebusting and gets great reactions. I highly recommend it.

If you like these then I also recommend Holey Moley by Sankey, and if you want to get that then I'd recommend the book Sankey Unleashed which is great value (I don't have the Holey Moley single trick purchase set, but can't imagine it gives you more than the book description). A guy from my magic club gave me a set of English Pennies that he'd drilled holes in (using a Black and Decker) and I carry them everywhere.

Cheers

Other suggestions

Dear Shanester: in addition to Bobo, try Card Mastery at the Table, and the Compendium of Nick Trost's card magic (L and L publishing). Nick's book has all the main sleights (shuffles, counts, deals, etc) that you will need to start doing your own routines. The book is packed with other goodies as well. Why not try mixing coins and cards. I have been coin matrix for 30 years now and the punters always love it! Houdini used to do it with two dollar bills, four half dollars, and a hankerchief, but I do it with four cards and four coins. The bigger the coins the more effectives the trick. Good Luck!
