New to Magic, but been wanting to learn for years!!!

Hi all.

Firstly... Yes I nicked the name form the TV show "My Family" and Bryan Milez is not my name... Its Rick

I've always been interesred in magic but never really taken the time to learn it till now. I want to learn some tricks to do at work. I work in a petrol station and handle alot of money on a daily basis, so most of my tricks would involve coins and bank notes, so I can impressing the ladies that come down there on a Friday night.

Anyway I thought I would start simple and I bought the "Jaw Dropper's" series of VHS tape (why they don't do them on DVD beats me as you can pause the footage without the screen going fuzzy). I've watched them and the tricks are easy enough to follow but I have one little problem.

Larry mentions a few tricks which don't appear on my tapes and asks us to refer to them. I have checked what my tapes say on the back of the boxes and it says "Internatinal Version - Not for sale in the USA)

Also here is what the rest of the info on the tapes say, but I didn't buy it from here, I got it for £10.00 on ebay all 4 tapes, in their slide out cases):

Code: Select all
http://www.thanedirect.co.uk/products/lifestyle/jawdropper/jawdropper.php

Now if I go to to this jaw droppers website, It lists the same tapes with alot more tricks on them (Scroll down the page to see the full list but I bet most of you already know what is on these tapes):

Code: Select all
https://sunshine.rahul.net/~jaw/cgi-bin/shop/cashcart.cgi?ACTION=ENTER&thispage=product.html&ORDER_ID=!ORDERID!

The version from Thane Direct has got alot less tricks and running time than the one from the show on the Jaw Droppers website? Can anyone expain why?

Have use Brits been taken for a ride?
Can anyone point me in a good direction in getting a version with all the tricks mentioned?
Does anyone know of any other 1st step to magic tapes or DVD which could help?

Also I would like to do a David Copperfield type trick to this monstrosity of a clock tower in the town I live in as everyone hates it and it doesn't work (90% of the time that is) and I'm sure it will get me on to the magic scene in no time.... Does/Can anyone point me in a good direction

Hi,

Welcome to the land of magic...you'll have fun...!
I'd strongly recommend that you buy a card magic book, (sure you have cards in the petrol station!) and start practicing the sleights involved. I'd recommend "The Royal Road to Card Magic" as this has all of the basic moves that you need to get to grips with cards. Magical moves do take a fair amount of practice to make them smooth, but in the end it's definitely worth it!
Opinions may differ but I do believe that when starting out in sleight-of-hand magic it's best to start with cards, as once you can palm a card then a coin'll be no problem.

Out of interest what sort of thing do you invisage yourself doing with the clock-tower? Give us a bit of background and I might be able to help you with some ideas....although it does sound a bit ambitious as you'd probably need the council's permission to do anything with it at all.... :?

Cheers...

Hi and Welcome.
RRTCM is a great suggestion of card magic bookk to start with. As a DVD to go with it I woul suggest Born To Perform as this includes more modern slights aswell but is perhaps not as in depth. They are both great though.

Cheers,

Hi again and thank for the welcome to this forum.

I am looking for the "The Royal Road to Card Magic" book as recommeded. I have seen a DVD on ebay

Not sure if it is the same as the book but I am looking on amazon for the book. I have found a number of books with the same title but not sure which one I should buy. Here are the links:

What other websites do you recommend to purchase from?

As for the clock tower trick. That was really ment as a joke as no one in the town I live in wants it, and it never works as it stops ticking... But if I could do a trick on it. It would be to make the thing vanish for good!!!!!

You could just dismantle it under cover of darkness, and then reassemble it somewhere else...and just keep doing that every night for a week...
Guarantee it'll be the talk of the town..."Have you noticed that the Clock-tower keeps moving about?" etc..etc..

Hi.
Welcome to the Forum. I’m a newbie too.
Let me know the first 3 rules that I’ve learned since I became a member:
1- Practice
2- Practice again
3- Practice even more.

Good luck!

Hi and welcome to TM

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??
