Four coin assembly

Postby MagicTom » Mar 12th, '06, 21:40

The Effect
A coin is placed in each corner of the mat / hankerchief.

2 cards are placed over 2 of the coins. A coin (that wasnt covered by the card) is then placed under the mat just about where the card is lying. When the card is removed the coin has jumped through the mat and has joined the coin under the card.
The final coin under the card strangely moves itself.

BASICALLY - 4 coins move themselves to under one card.

Cost
In Mark Wilsons complete course. See Reviews.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review

A simple yet a fantastic effect. I'm not a coin magic fan but this is superb. A stunning effect if well rehearsed and perfected.
Looks a little bit complicated / scary in the book if your not used to learning tricks from books but once you get it, its easy!

Overall

Superb. Learn it in 5 minutes. Practise until sleight perfect. The perform it with confidence. People shall be stunned!

ps - I saw a similar trick performed in covent garden but he didnt use the matt and no cards. Just covered coins with his hands and they moved. Can anyone tell me the name of this "adaption" or the gimmick possibly used to create the effect.

Coin assembly

Postby DrTodd » Mar 13th, '06, 08:26

Houdini used to do it with four coins, a handkerchief, and two dollar bills. The first move is very clever and then the rest of the routine unfolds nicely. I like the coint matrix with four cards and four coins. I have been using it a natural follow-on effect to coins across, which looks nice since your start with four coins, do coins across, add four cards and then do coin matrix. Many magicians also do a variant with bottle caps and their hands, and I have been doing one with four large dice!

Matrix was the first 4 coin 4 card assembly and was created by Al Scheider. It is a fantastic trick that has spawned a thousand variants. However the original is still great and available from Al's website as a download www.worldmagiccenter.com

If you want to do a more impromptu assembly that doesn't require a soft surface then look at Chink a Chink by Roth (or the original with sugar cubes by Heba Heba Al in Stars of Magic) or TransEuro Express by Reed McLintock.

coin assembly

great refs! Wouldn't it be nice to have an annotated bibliography on magic????

The Al Schneider videos are great. He does a really nice coins across with three silver and a copper that I had not seen before. His matrix is a little more complicated than mine, but it looks great!

Al's coins across (there are several) including his Han Ping Chien variant (known as Al Ping Chien) are detailed in his Al Schneider on Coins ebook (and I assume in his Coins Across ebook). I don't have his Al Schneider Technique DVD series, but I'm assuming that they are there too.

Al Schneiders coins across is in vol 2 of the Al Schneider techniques dvd along with his matrix.. coincidently its his version i used in the last comp (without the hang ping chien bit cos i REALLY hate that move!)

Is this pretty much the same as sympathetic coins?

coin assembly

I like the hang ping chien move. I use it three times in my coins across routine that I have been doing for over 20 years now. It is very convincing and allows for a great one at a time cross from my left hand to my right hand.

mark leveridge has a good routine on his new money magic dvd
it uses 4 borrowed coins, and 2 borrowed credits cards, along with some good patter
and easy to do!
plenty more routines worth looking at on the dvd too

Don't forget you don't have to use coins.

Sugar cubes, bottle tops etc.

Good effect, still got to make sure I don't make that give away "clink" noise sometimes.

Gaston Quieto's Breeze Coins is very direct, and only uses 4 coins

Very nice

Coin assembly

I got Al's cd-rom with a big PDF on his various coin assemblies. Really nice stuff, with lots of pics to go along with the narrative. I really like his style.

For more info on making Han Ping Chien deceptive, look at Ron Bauer's Butch Ringo and the Sheep (also a very good piece of impromptu magic)
