Question on Card Performing Material

Postby arkos » Mar 21st, '06, 08:54

Hey what sort of material is the black stuff that all the card magicians seem to do there stuff on, i have heard Brad Christian refer to it as a cloth i think, but is there an actual name for the proper stuff? Im thinking its the same material used on pool/snooker tables but am not certain, the one brad uses looks a bit thicker than that but he could have it on some sort of platform. It basically looks like a door mat, im sure you all know what i mean, where can i buy these and can i buy my own outside a magic store such as a fabric store?

Thanks.

I think he wants to know which material is on top (velvet for example).
Right?

I went to the local market and bought a piece of fabric, put that on a wooden board and I'm done 8)

Pool tables are covered in felt. And so are close up mats.

A velvet pool table might look prety cool but it would be like playing on grass

Pool tables are covered in a KIND of felt. It's a woven felt, and isn't the same stuff you'd get from a fabric shop.

Velvet coated foam makes an excellent and durable card performing mat, much nicer and forgiving than felt for effects such as Matrix. Plus, a velvet card mat has far nicer properties for coin work.

I use both—felt and 'velour' surfaced mats. The velour/velvet surface is far easier to keep clean, and seems to be longer lasting.

I would stress that I personally find a foam backed mat with a cushion effect to be much better for coin magic and card magic, as it allows fast and easy grabs on cards and coins.

Colour is another factor—personally I prefer black because of the contrast, but many prefer green or red.

If you are after a performing TABLE as opposed to a mat, find the address of your local Vending or Gaming Machine company, and they will be able to furnish you with a board coated in pool table baise for little cost.

Although, proper shop-bought performing mats are among the best I've used...

That looks very nice. You'll ahve to let us know how it travels (does it keep its shape etc), a review would be nice.

Im from Australia, and would love to give it a review, but im a bit of a newbie so i wouldnt know how to compare it with an A class close up mat, but will give it a go :D From what i can see in the ebay linm i provided it doesnt look to big judging bt the cards spread over it but i could be wrong, can anyone else tell? I will probably ask the seller for dimensions.

I'm probably wrong but I seem to remember someone ages ago mentioning that the material used for wet suits could be used successfully for a performance mat. I'm sure there are one or two dive shops in Oz who could help you out with this one  .

I'm gonna get an Apollo Close-Up pad soon. I heard that it's long-lasting then the other closeup pads.
