The Effect
DVD on Paul Cummins work on Ed Marlo's Deliberate Side Steal. 5 different uses of the move and 5 tricks in which to showcase them
Cost $40 (about £24)
Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
Probably a 4. This will require a good basic knowledge of card handling (if you want to do the tricks especially, as basic and intermediate moves are only referenced). The move itself will require plenty of practice to make this invisible but certainly not outside the range of anyone willing to give it enough practice.
Review
Paul Cummins is an excellent magician who thinks and works. I first saw him on Up in Smoke which is a great video on using the Rosenthal backclip (with PC's handlings) for great up close coin magic. He has once again come through with this DVD.
That's a lot of money for just one move you might say? Well it's a great move and it is shown in several different ways. In fact if you wanted to you could perform the full routine that PC demonstrates of 5 very different tricks essentially using this control. And that's what it is, a control but a very efficient and subtle control. If you can do this properly, then it will appear as if you've done nothing but square the deck openly and there is no great need to misdirect.
The teaching is excellent and easily accessible through a good system of menus (options to see performance only, explanation only, sleight only or performance, explanation and sleight in sequence). The views are either full shot or close up on the hands, but they often have the hands view superimposed on the full shot too. Then they do a slow mo repeat from a different angle. PC goes over all of the learning points and gives some great hints and tips. There are descriptions of using the side steal as a control to top, to 2nd from top under a cover, as a pass, into full palm and as a secret slip cut. There are 5 routines a bonus and 2 performance only pieces (one, Punken Droker was published in cogitations if anyone subscribed). They are all different, get good reactions and are entertaining. However this is an utility sleight that will go straight into your arsenal of moves when you get it down
Overall
If you want to learn a great sleight from one of the recognised masters of it, in a manner that is clear and easy to learn, then get this. I give this 10/10
