Pure effect or Absolute Magic?

Postby Downhill_ben » Apr 8th, '06, 08:37

Hiya guys. I've been wanting one of Derren brown's books now for a whiule and i've finally found the cash, and the will to go and get one. Question is, which one of the two above should it be???
I want to know more about audience control, misdirection, performance, the way the audience sees things and about how to present my magic in a believable way.
Basically im not fussed too much with tricks or effect (although a few would be nice). Which of the two books is more about presentation and the phycology(spelling) behind magic?

Thanks alot!

Ben

Yep, absolute magic is the one. It doesn't have any effects in it (though there are some suggestions for effects without any hint of method) but is a great book.

basically
Pure Effect: tricks n what not, got that wonderful "3 card routine in it"
Absolute Magic: a 200 page rant on why magic should be percieved as magical!

AM totally changed the way i look at my magic, everyone should read it. plus it just looks really pretty and intelluctual so you can sit with it and sip coffee and look... intellectual!

Only in theory NO methods are described.

The ring effect for instance is only used to demonstrate derrens model for close up magic. Actually a few more examples wouldnt have hurt.

Buy two copies of each. They're going out of print at Derren's request, so I've heard.

All the distributors are now sold out of both copies and the publisher has been asked not to reprint, so what's left are on dealers shelves now.

We managed to get a last stock pile but it's a real shame. Both were great books!

Best wishes and good luck with your magic!

I managed to snap up a copy of Pure Effect recently...the price had actually come down as opposed to gone up, which apparently some place have done!

Can't comment on Absolute Magic, haven't got it, but Pure Effect is absolutely first class. Mentalism, magic, theory...all brilliant pieces, though the card stuff is quite advanced. But I'm just echoing what has been said on many boards in countless posts...card forces work a treat as well :D .

Luckily I bought both books before they went out of print.

Which book would you recommend to be read first?
