Ipswich Magic Society Convention

Postby bananafish » Sep 18th, '03, 17:02

I appreciate most of you are probably too far away to attend this - but it's looking more and more like it's going to be a good day. :)

It's on Sunday 19th October - full details can be found here.

http://www.ipswichmagicalsociety.co.uk/Page4.html

During the day there will be various lectures - and many dealers including Studio9, The Card Collection(Cards4Magic), Aquarius, Camtryx, Mike Austin, Martin Cox and Alakazam.

If our host is reading this, I am sure the IMS could also fit you in if you like :)

As Studio9 are there I am hoping NickJ will be as well (so he can show me the single pass OOTW separation!)

In the evening there will be what looks to me like being a great show, starting at 7.15pm. Amongst others it includes Loki - Magic Circle Stage Magician Of The Year 2003 and many more

I'll do my best to be there, but this is the first I've heard of it! The boss was keeping it quiet.
I've just got back from a demo night at the shop where I had to go through a load of stuff for a room full of magicians. If you have ever tried that you will know how it feels, especially since they are only there to find out how stuff works, it is very offputting and I managed to mess most of it up despite it all being very easy. Oh, well, that is life, it seems that my hands and patter are well enough trained to do my normal repertoire when slightly (read very) inebreiated, yet I can't do sleightless tricks sober if there is another magician watching.

I may well try and get there, as it is about 40 mins away from me.

It will be good to see you there jabba. Bring lots of money though - with all those dealers there it will be difficult not to spend...

just out of curiosity.... as ive never been to a convention or suchlike, are the products sold by dealers cheaper than buying online or are the prices the same?

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

In my very limited experience. yes - they can be cheaper. Especially if you have bought from the dealer before. Introduce yourself and ask for a discount. It may sound a bit cheeky - but it normally works for me. The chances are that the more you buy the bigger discount you will get.

The best thing though is that for many of the tricks/effects they will demo them for you - and some of these guys are pretty accomplished magicians in there own right. Peter Nardi of Alakazam for example, or NickJ of Studio 9 :) (do I get a big discount now Nick?)

I'm profoundly jealous of you guys...

Our 'local' magic conventions are a world apart from the ones you describe. We're in 'the sticks', as t'were, and nobody in their right mind would venture this far in the hope of trading... the catchment is too small.

I would love the opportunity to come and meet not only the dealers like Alakazam, Studio 9 and the like, but also you guys - whom I've got equal respect for.

Maybe one day when I've got the chance, I'll get a day out of the office and make a proper journey out of it...

I may be an accomplished magician, but when it comes to giving demos I tend to suck pretty badly! And I'm afraid you will have to compliment The Boss to get any chance of a discount, and even then it is unlikely!

Nick - your boss - what a great guy eh? :)

Seige - It would be nice if maybe one year we all met up at one of the bigger conventions - (although I hear these can get pretty expensive).
