Am I the only Female magician?!?!?!

Postby Roxy_shalom » May 16th, '06, 22:44

I am yet to meet another female magician. In fact I've never even met another female into magic. My mom always was but I think she was pretendeing on my sake since I've been into since I was so young

are there any female magicians on this board other than me?

Why do you guys think my type is so rare? Honestly does anyone know for sure? I've always picked career choices that are against my gender. I have been doing carpentr (rough carpentry - framing, roofing, subfloor, drywall, carpet, etc) for almost 3 years. And I'm not some burly bitch (Excuse my language) In fact I am only 5'9'' and 135 pounds. It's all about detemination. i've never met another female carpenter.

Lol the only problem is having all of the guys always hitting on me lol I am engaged and my future-hubby doesn't get mad about it but I always feel bad when I tell someone I'm engaged!! :D

Anyway sorry for the rant just curious about other females!

Hi Roxy

You're not the only female on the boars but you are in a small minority - unfortunately!

I've heard many a magician say that a good female magician can make her weight in gold so stick with the magic

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

well I don't ever intend to go pro (I mean I have plans to make extra cash, but its not I lifelong ambition) It used to be for me, but once I discovered the wonders of the medical field I fell in love. I want to be a virologist. The thing I love about magic is just the expression people get and I want to give that to people more and more!! Plus it's stupid I know, but there are some tricks that I do that its just as visually pleasing to me even though I know whats going on. It's a trip!

How many other females are there on this board? A number of them or an extreme few? Its not a big deal to me actually, lol 98% of my friends in real life are male so don't think I have a problem with men, I'm just curious about some sort of ratio :P

Only a few unfortunately. I raised this same topic a few years ago and the situation hasn't changed in all that time, the ladies are in the minority and probably expected to adopt the Magical Assistant role automatically. As we all know that these assistants do the real magic while the Magician just postures and poses (OK, sorry guys!) it's not a negative role but it would be good to see more female magicians such as Kerry Scorah - check out http://www.kerryscorah.co.uk/

We also have some female magicians in Turkey. One of them is even better than me at the cards and won a contest between Balkan Countries which she beat all the guys on cards. :)

I think it is to do with the genetic makup of our brains.

In women the part of the brain that is used to perform such tasks like slight of hand and magic is actualy pre programed to think about shoes and shopping lol

It is the same with map reading

Ok I was only joking, don't flame me!

I made my wife dissapear just by arguing with her!!!

is it perhaps that women are too busy thinking about kittens and the latest feet-crippling shoes?...

..i said once before that breasts are the ultimate in misdirection...so i'll say it again...

honestly, i'd like to see more women in magic, they are probably far better at gaining rapport than the average bloke...

or perhaps any story-telling effects would just dissolve into gossip?

...plus, women are far more intelligent and generally lovely beings than us man-slugs, so obviously wouldn't feel the need to kick me after reading my jokey remarks...

I think you have made an intersting point as I have thought about this in the past as well. But in saying that, one of my girl cousins is interested in dabbling with magic as well. She is not religious about it, but she did go to a magic store and buy some bikes and a book on card tricks. She also asked me to purchase some D'Lites for her and to teach her a couple of card sleights (maybe it is because she has been hanging around with me for too long  )

The other funny thing is that when I perform I usually get the best reactions from women as you all have probably experienced as well. So it is obvious that women enjoy magic, so go figure!

I suspect differences are largely cultural/social, but I'd be interested to know if there's much difference in general to how much people enjoy/react magic, and their perceptions and expectations depending on their sex. Issues like whether they try to work out the effects as if they are puzzles, or accept them as good entertainment. If there is a difference in how people deal with watching magic, it may give insight about why there seem to be fewer female magicians.

(I only perform to people I know, so I really don't know)

It may simply be that historically there haven't been many famous role models for female magicians, and it's taking a while to change.

Actually, a bit of thought has just solved the issue. It's quite simply that any hobby I have will automatically not interest women. The effect is so powerful that it has even disrupted the space-time continuum, and caused a historical lack of female magicians.

See what can be achieved when you ignore the power of Occam's razor?
