Penny in the pocket

Postby byron0512 » May 22nd, '06, 00:42

I literally stumbled on this one, I wondered if anyone had come across this effect before. It is revealed in its entirity as it is purely psychological.

The spec puts a penny in left or right pocket.

You describe how it is a magic penny that is starting to grow. As all things that are large are heavy the penny is getting heavier. And like a pair of old fashioned scales that tip towards the heaviest side so you feel yourself tipping as the penny gets bigger.

Have the specs stand ankles together, toes together and hands by their sides. And watch people fall over sideways. great fun.

A 10 year old told me that they had heard something about it, but didn't understand. I just used a bit of psychological savvie to work out what to do to make it work.

has anyone heard of this b4?

I hadn't heard of this, but is a good example of Ideomotor Response. Something similar occurs if you get someone to shut their eyes and imagine the sensation of falling over backwards. Just talking to them for a minute or so is usually enough to cause them to actually fall over.
There's a lot of interesting psychological experiments in this area...play around a bit....

what i was surprised at was the test i did they all had their eyes open - if you shut your eyes you over balance anyway after long enough. i was surprised that it worked with their eyes open!
