Pinky Break

Postby Redsixer » May 22nd, '06, 22:13

I am working on a card trick that requires me to force a card using a pinky break. Does anyone have tips for this. I know I need to prctice it more but it doesnt look natural when I hold the cards. There seems to be a noticeable line in them.

May I recommend the DVD in my signature? It has a good arsenal of sleights and routines including (if I remember correctly) a decent force and of course, pinky breaks.

On the subject of concealing a break, make sure you don't have the entire tip of your finger in the deck, just a bit of skin. Also, have the other three fingers along the side of the deck which should cover any traces of the break on the side. From the front the line should be only barely noticeable, if at all. Just don't point the cards directly edge-on to the spectators and you should be fine!

Having not seen the DVD I can't make comment. But I'll second the just using a bit of skin rather than the whole finger.

I used to do it all the time, however I'm now slowly getting out of the bad habit.
I think there must be something about my performance, because even if people watch my hands and see the whole little finger in, they don't realise :?

Must... shake... off... bad... habits...

Holding a pinky break involves inserting a tiny bit of flesh, NOT the whole pinky. You hold the cards in dealer grip with about a 3mm gap on ONE CORNER ONLY—the corner where your pinky lies.

This way, the deck looks square, and the break is not visible from two sides of the deck.

Practice!

It's not lol

It's a really bad habit and I'm really trying to get out of it at the moment.
Although that said I'm also trying to use classic force wherever possible lol.

Although I haven't actually inserted my pinky for a while now so I'm definitely getting better :D

Yeah I think I just need to practice more. I havent really got into card tricks that much, but I am starting to now. Its just when you dont feel comfortable with something you wonder if you are doing it wrong.

I think that this is another of those pieces of magic that to the performer look blindingly obvious but because the spectator doesn't know what to look for they are just unaware of it.

I am still messy with cards and quite often hold them without squring them. This hides any line, plus I try to hold them slightly tipping downward which also helps hide any line.
