Devil's Picturebook vs Osterlind's Mind Mysteries

Postby Maddened » May 23rd, '06, 04:47

Hi everyone. I just like to get some opinions as to which of the two should I get. I'm getting into mentalism and from the reviews I've read on the forums, DPB seems to go into fairly advanced stuff about psychology, presentation, and so on. As for Mind Mysteries, I've only heard good things about the Osterlind breakthrough stack.

I'm not very good at judging what material might be appropriate for me, and when I was into cards, I had a spell where I went out and got everything I could get my hands on (ok, with a very limited budget, that's not a lot) and ended up with a fair amount of advanced material I wasn't able to peruse right away. I'm trying to not make that mistake again, so hope the more experienced people here would be able to help me make a decision.

I personally hope to be able to start studying techniques and concepts more than effects and routines, but as I'm just a greenhorn at this, I don't know if I'm being too amibitious. Thanks all! :)

I would keep with the choices Craig Browning mentioned in his mentalism post (listen to him he really knows his stuff)

DPB is an excellent item to view and study but it's not specifically confined to mentalism or even mental magic. It has a selection of superb tricks and routines but if it's mentalism you're after then go with Craig's suggestions.

Yes, DPB is superb, but is 90% good old card magic. However, it is advanced card magic, and in places the methods aren't that revolutionary; its Derren's person handling that is more significant than his card handling.

I assume you guys mean this thread: http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic10761.php?

Yea, yea you bet I'll be listening to him. I've already saved his post about the suggested Mentalism study guide. :P

So I guess I should hold off for now and just concentrate on Corinda and Annemann? (See what I mean about the impulse to collect...)

Thanks all!
