Video Conversion

Postby rabbit » Jun 12th, '06, 20:14

Anybody know of any free video converting software? I have a clip I'd like to post from my webcam, but it's AVI, and it's 18MB for 4 seconds of video

If you use XP you should have Windows Movie Maker 2 preinstalled - have a look in your start menu. It can do all sorts of conversions. I wouldn't recommend getting one from the internet as they're usually spyware or trial versions.

The internet is one of the most friendliest places if you know how to use it!!! www.download.com is a nice site to find freeware with no viruses and stuff.

However, as Kati already said, Windows Movie Maker is quite nice. Version 2 comes with the Service Pack 2 however, which you will need to download from the Microsoft website.

Hm...there is a lot of good stuff out on the 'net but I've never been able to find a decent video encoder/still extractor/thingy - they all were limited to 30 seconds or watermarked the video annoyingly. At least for me :).

Movie Maker! Movie Maker!

If it's AVI, I like to use VirtualDub to compress it to something smaller. Otherwise, ImTOO is good.

I haven't used Windows Movie Maker before but yeh, it makes WMV, obviously and it's good compression. I think you can just import the AVI and off you go.

Heres the converter I use:
http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/

Don't let the website scare you (it's japanese but for me the characters don't show up as actual japanese characters). The program name is written in english on the left and you can install it with english as the default language.

I use this to convert video files for my iPod since apple are too tight to supply a converter with them (you dont even get a mains charger!! ).

Anyway, it works well for alot of formats and I've used it for converting files which movie maker can't wrap its tiny mind around to files which it understands.

There are probably better converters out there but I hope this helps anyone who can't be bothered looking. :)
