Postby dat8962 » Jul 14th, '07, 19:04

The Effect

Various coin effects during the 85 minutes running time.

Thank You For the Tip
One Way
The Glove
I Want You
Cash Money
Fire
Dr Kard & Miss Money Surprise
Cocktail Matrix
Smile Land

Cost

As with Volume 1, the cheapest I could find online was £19.99 at:

http://www.magicmagic.co.uk

Incidentally, this is where I bought mine! Average price found elsewhere was around £27 per volume which is a whopping £14 more than you'll pay at MagicMagic if you buy both volumes  .

Difficulty

(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Most definitely a 5

Review

Start by reading the review of volume 1 here:

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic19950.php

The format is the same – watch the routine and then the explanation and the DVD was filmed around the same time as volume 1. The routines each last for around 15 to 20 seconds with the longest coming in around 30 seconds.

At this point, I recommend that you revisit volume 1 again and ask if you’re good (or worthy) enough to progress to this level as this is coin magic at it unbelievable best. It’s free flowing and high impact stuff that will take you to a new realm but beware, this isn’t stuff that you will learn quickly. Lock yourself away in a monastery and devote years of study to the master that Stone is. If he was this good in his early 20’s then I dread to think how good he will be now.

A number of the routines within this volume involve a spectator with coins appearing in and vanishing from their hands – yes theirs! The sleights themselves are variations on some the basics taught in volume 1 and a few new ones. The Pely’s secret coin turnover is pure genius, particularly when used with a shuttle pass. However, many of the sleights used in these performances are executed with multiple coins instead of a single coin.

This obviously requires much more precision and skill when performed at speed, and speed is part of making these routines flow! For an example, being able to shake hands with someone whilst palming four coins in the same hand without them noticing. There are also routines that require multiple simultaneous sleights in the same hand such as a classic palm AND a back clip (taught), as well as coin sleights combined with other objects. Hopefully you can now appreciate that this is not your run of the mill coin work but the result, if you can make it flow as well as Stone does, will leave your audience thinking that the only explanation for what they have seen is sorcery.

Overall

Start by watching the performances only section instead of the ‘watch and learn’ sequence and I challenge anyone to keep up with Stone and spot his sleight of hand, even after watching a few times. This is a truly awesome display of coin magic.

Volume 2 is an obvious companion to volume 1 and can provide you with the inspiration and motivation to keep practicing but you’re going to have to be good to master this content and get it to performance standard. The complexity between volume 1 and 2 is more of a leap rather than a step. Despite this, if you're buying volume 1 then you just know that you're going to get volume 2 as well

To use a phrase from Hitch Hikers Guide – watching Stone perform these routines is like being hit around the head with a slice of lemon – that’s wrapped around a brick. Have someone close by to help you back into your seat, have an optician on stand-by to put your eyes back into their sockets and a medic to assist after you’ve turned that putrid shade of green through envy of what you will see Stone do. I kid you not!

Thanks, sounds very tempting, even if it is completely out of my league.

Don't worry - it's totally out of my league as well  but there again, so is volume 1

At least I have a more realistic chance of attaining that level of skill.

Thanks for these reviews. I was put off them because of the word "basic" in the titles.
I now see this is not the case. Why call them "Basic Coin Magic" when they're clearly not?

That's a good point and I'm not sure if this has something to do with the translation into English from Les bases de la magie des pieces :?

This is on it's way to me, from the excellent folks at MagicMagic.

Judging by the coin routine on Real Sectets of Magic Vol. 1, this is going to be pretty rock hard. But something to sink my teeth into.

Thanks again Dat, old bean.

No problem

In trying this one out, you obviously have more patience than I do
