What to say when spectator says "OMG how did you do tha

Postby Deja Vu » Aug 4th, '07, 17:58

Well I run into this a lot. I do a trick and the spectator is amazed and they say "Oh my god, how did you do that?" I'm not sure if its a question or a statement. I know you guys have run into this a lot before too, so help me out please.

I also get a lot of "Oh my god, do it again!" I'm still confused on what to say here. The general rule is you never do the same trick twice for the same audience, but what do you say when asked to do it again? Just saying "NO" sounds kind of bland.

Thanks,

Deja Vu.

Do something different. Let the spec know that you won't do the same trick again, but say "I've something even weirder to show you" or similar.

you could also do a variation, or make it seem like your going to do the same thing but have a different ending

If someone says 'OMG' I'd assume they were American or a chav who watches too much Hollywood teen nonsense on Sky.

It's natural that people will ask you to do something amazing again, either because they couldn't believe what they saw the first time and want to see it again to make sure their eyes aren't deceiving them or they want to try and work it out.

As The Magic Wand stated, it's best to do something different or if you HAVE TO repeat the effect, do using a different method. This is not possible with all effects of course.

When I am about to do an effect that I know will evoke the 'Do that again!' response, I usually say beforehand, "Watch this closely as I'm only going to do this once.", this often rids them of asking to see it again as you have stated you won't repeat it and you will also have their undivided attention.

" Don't get cocky, its my show ok? '' I say this tongue in cheek and usually gets a laugh... then I just do something else.

and then break their nose right?

if this happens a lot, I guess you could use a "sucker" effect where you supposedly reveal the method, but then it turns out not to be that method. Having trouble of thinking of an example, but I'm sure others will help

if people shout "oh my god" at me where I'm from, it's usually not associated with a magic trick at all. For example, recently I walked into a train station full of chavs to be greeted from nowhere by a 15 year old girl wearing, what I can only assume is fashionable amongst her type, a rather unflattering grey baggy tracksuit, with the most charming of greetings "oh my gods, look at this flippin muggins". I'm sure you can work out which word has been slyly edited for the sake of taste and decency. As soon as someone comes up with a proven method of making chavs disappear, they are going to make a mint.

How did you do that? Rather quite simple, magic! Then move on to something else.

How do you do that? - Very well

"Tell me how you do that!!!!" - "ok... but i'll have to kill you.... and killing you isn't the hard part, it's getting rid of your body... so..."

Or...

Take a sheep, burn candles, kill the sheep by cutting his throat, drink his blood and you'll understand everything....

I stole this one from some one on this forum.
"Very well"

Spectator wrote:"Oh my god, Do that again!"

"I can't repeat them, but I can do others"

One question i get often is "Where did you learn that?"

my favorite response to that is "Well i was in India and climbed to the top of a mountain i and i met this guru..." by that point they start laughing or say I'm lieing , then i chime in with well your right it wasn't India, it was England" its long but it tends to get a chuckle from most people

If a spectator asks me to do a card trick again, I make the whole deck disappear and then say I can't. Same also applies to vanishes. I can't do it again, the coin, bill, card, etc. is gone.

I like to travel alo so when I'm doing magic in other counties I usually start by talking about how when I was in thailand I spend a few months learning from monks how to control objects with my mind. alot of my card tricks story lines involve a "scaled down" model of what these monks were able to do with larger objects. This mind control becomes my reason for being able to do what I do.

Haha, I love the "very well" response. I'm gonna try that one.
