Hey, some of us are just a few years older than 12, and anyway when I was 12 I was way ahead of the Woolworths magic, I was onto Marvin's Magic

EDIT: Forgot my Sarcasm tags :P

hmmmmm this is something thats actually starting to bug me more and more...everyone seems to sneer at marvins magic sets and woolies sets BUT what happened to the statement made that its not the props that make the magic but the performer?... makes you wonder how good some people actually are... or is it just their super expensive props that do the work?

maybe the next comp should be "Marvins magic"

Nowt wrong with the concept behind many a Marvins product! Have given them as gifts to friends that have wanted to learn to do a few bits, (along with them promising to not give away how its done!)

Anyhow, after a fairly dissapointing Christmas haul magic wise (except for Mr. Browns Devils Picturebook, all I can say is WOW!) I visited International Magic and Davenports today, to get myself a few belated Chrimbo presents.

I got...
Close up card Magic by Harry Lorayne
Mastering the Art of Magic by Eugene Burger
The Card Magic of Nick Trost
Latest copy of Magic Magazine
Latest copy of Genii

Found its far easier to put up with the novelty socks and other junk to get myself what I really wanted!

I got the hippity hop rabbits (mini) from my sister for my kid's shows. It is actually very good for my family who think they can guess how it is done ;). I love sucker tricks :P. I also got the three shell game, and dvd from sal piacente from my grandparents. And from my uncle i actually got a case of marvin's magic lol. You guys my snear at it, however some of it is rather good. For example their wallet is rather decent (which i got) and flying coins isn't that bad. I also ended up with the great british coin trick (matrix), coin through glass (by far some of the best reactions i ever get from maervin's magic range...and it is examinable) and a new pack of marked cards, which i needed due to my older one getting rather worn.

Overall, not a bad christmas...definately "magical" ;)

Love

Chris

I'm with mog. Some of the quality isn't the highest, but I find Marvin's kits to be quite good. Since the cards don't hold up, I go ahead and make bicycle versions of many of their packet effects.

Like blapsing said, the British coin trick is an excellent piece of magic. You can't get much better than an easy to perform almost squeaky clean piece of magic.

I rather enjoyed getting the ultimate card tricks set.

Did anyone else notice they've started selling d'lites, now! From what I can tell, they're not knock-offs either, since Rocco's name is on the packaging.

I'm still looking to snag the Marvin's 50 greatest pub tricks - just because I think the packaging looks cool.

So, as mog says - take the strength of the magic in mind - not the look of the box. It may look like kids stuff, but I assure you, it's not.

Not as much magic as usual, though usually my other half goes OTT on birthdays and xmas. Saying that, she did go OTT this year, just not on magic.
Anyway. I got...

Strong magic by Darwin Ortiz

Dear Mr Fantasy by john Bannon

Scams and Fantasies by Darwin Ortiz

Self working mental magic

Fight dirty by Andy Nyman

A Zippo lighter with Ace of spades engraved on it. (now need to come up with some good magical uses)

Have read dear mr fantasy and it is excellent. Have started reading Strong magic, and it looks like it will be taking pride of place alongside derren browns Absolute magic in my collection.

My stocking was filled with lots of fun stuff, this year.

Gregory Wilson's Ring Leader DVD
Thought Transmitter
Joe Porper's Poker Chip Surprise
White D'lites (those suckers are BRIGHT)
Safety Hole
Credit Card Fraud
Psychic Color Sticks

Also, "The Magician and the Cardsharp" (not technically a "magic" book, but rather a book about Dai Vernon and how he visited back-room poker games across the country to find a center dealer. Sounds pretty cool)

Oh, talking about Marvin's Magic sets, I just dug out one of my old ones and took the cups and balls from it, as I saw a great routine and figured it out
