Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

It's a very commonly found item but as previously stated, you don't want the gold version

I bought mine from Mike Danata's who does mail order and has this in stock.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Ageing A Haunted Key.

Postby Allen Tipton » May 2nd, '06, 14:27

:) Have you ever considered putting in a fire..though if you only have central heating that's tricky. Holding it in a gas flame might help (use pliers)
Why not look in Car Boot Sales or Flea markets? There must be many old keys for sale there.
PYRO Smurf: Buy Barrie Richardson first book, Theater Of The Mind & check out his haunted key; pages 64 to 66. I bought one off him, when i booked him to lecture to The Nottm. Guild about 5 years ago. This one is worked similar but with an advanced 'gimmick' It turns right round. Nothing gimmicky about the key though.
If ypou can find a copy of Roy Johnson's lecture booklet, (1995) 'Unique'
there is a brilliant (& with all basic moves described) Haunted Key. Page 3.This has a shoe lace threaded thru'. It is followed by Key Cords( pages 4, 5, 6) in which 2 different colour cords are threaded thru the key, knotted at the ends then covered with a handkerchief or tissue & held by the spectator, One cord, chosen by him falls free of the key. Again un unfeked key.

Heh, heh, heh... Took me a while to find it. My first advice to anyone aging a key is to clearly mark the EXACT spot you buried it in!!!

Thanks Allen for your advice, the way I'm doing it seems to be working out though. First I took MagicDisoman's avice and left it for a week in pickling vinegar, rubbed it in a couple of spots with a wire brush and now it's been underground in the garden as Dat suggested since Thursday. It appears to be starting to age, quite nicely... Thanks for all your help guys, I'm going to leave it underground for about two weeks total and see what happens (I'll let you know the results). :)

Dang that looks good, I tried violently hitting mine with various objects and using sandpaper but it didn't work. Maybe if i urn it, it could leave a mark. Hmm

Well Done Mr Flashy in suceeding your task to age the haunted key. How long did you leave it in the jar for?

No Delude...
Well done Magic Discoman and Dat (credit where credit is due I think)

Recipe For One Well Aged Haunted Key

Ingredients:

1 Sparkly silver haunted key.
1 Jar of pickled something (onions, gherkins, heads etc).
1 Garden or plantpot of soil (for vampiric key use soil from it's homeland).
1 Wire brush/sandpaper.
Some water.
Plenty of Patience.

How to make:
1: Eat the pickles, but don't drink the vinegar.
2: Lovingly marianade the sparkly key in the jar of vinegar for about one week (applying liberal amounts of patience).
3: Once the key is looking a little pitted, remove from vinegar and wash.
4: Scrub small areas vigorously with the wire brush, then repeat this on small areas of the key
5: Bury the key in the soil (forgetting where you put it). Leave for one week (applying liberal amounts of patience).
6: Respond to a request asking how the key is coming along and spend half an hour to forty five minutes hunting in the soil for it.
7: After finding it, breath sigh of relief, wash and bury once more for one to two more weeks (depending on taste) remembering to mark where you put it this time.
8: Apply liberal amounts of patience.
9: Remove from soil, wash and bask in the glorious thrill of deliberately tarnishing a perfectly decent object.

When you're not using it - put it back in the garden.

I'll try and find mine at the weekend a post a picture as it still looks a couple of hundred years older than yours
