Trick of the Mind for magicians

Postby dangifford » May 4th, '06, 16:22

It may by my imagination, but did Derren Brown perform a pretty technical sleight involving a pack of cards and his lap in Sunday's Trick of the Mind?

It was just before the final part of the Monte Carlo card trick where the lady named any card and that ended up face-up in the water with the others face down. (A wet brainwave).

It was performed very well and a lay-person wouldn't have spotted it but I can't see why it wasn't edited out unless it was left in specially for magicians.

Anyone else spot it or anything similar in Derren's TV shows?

The camera cuts around this scene were enough masking I believe.

There feasibly is only one way he could have achieved the result, as we all know.

A few posts I'd like to address: firstly, SirRawlins. Oh dear lol :D.

dangifford, looking back at my earlier post it reads as if I was being a bit short with you, I wasn't trying to be. And I think we were both wrong, though you were closer with your 'wet Brainwave' which essentially (in effect anyway) is was - as DS says it was a version of Vernon's Boat Trick as the cards were not mixed face-up and face-down, in which case it would have been a version of the Triumph I guess.

Silly me!.

No problem friend.:D

I'm easily confused with trick names - it's the effect that counts!

Mrs.M wanted to know if someone went in the water and cleaned all the cards out afterwards. I assured her that Derren would be sure take care of such environmental issues  .

He he. I wondered who would be doing that too!

I really enjoyed it this week. Not sure that a red shirt and tie is quite Victorian, but geting down to some tricks, whether time predictions, phantom limbs or card botherring lights my candles a lot more than the sainted Dame Kelly running around.

I was interested in the Mote Carlo scene, when he seemed to be doing his quick 'Deck Memroizations' with a couple of quick riffles, and the 'Tell the missing card' routine... is there a 'trick' behind those or are they an actual tallent that he has spent along time honing?

If it were a lesser magician, then i would automaticly think it were a trick of some kind, but with Derren i have enormous respect for his tallents of memory and card counting, so i see that he may ACTUALY be able to memorize those cards, any thoughts?
