E3 Expo

Postby SirRawlins » May 10th, '06, 10:23

Hello Guys,

Nobody had spoken about it yet so i thought i'd bring it into the lime light.

This week see's the E3 Expo shocaseing the next years worth of computer game entertainment.

Everything is still comming into the light, but thought i'd come on and poke fun at the Playstation Fans, all this time waiting only for it to be a mind boggling disapointment HA!

Microsoft pulled out the big guns this year, old Bill even showed his face, excelent stuff, the man is like an Idol to me.

Anyway guys, I'm sure a few of you fellow Geeks will have plenty to say.

Rob

Yep, interesting choice of console name from Nintendo eh? ... shows a complete lack of Market Research in just about every single nation around the world.

Even in Japan i was reading that apparently there standard vocabulary doesnt use the sound wii, so they have trouble pronouncing it and have to say it 'waa' ... this might not be true, but its what i was reading!

Or else it's a stroke of genius so profound that us mere mortals cannot understand the full repercussions.

I still want it!

I wish Sony would hurry up with the PS3. As much as I love outwitting those pesky Hellghast in Killzone, I want more!

lol .. Don't worry Tomo, there'll be plenty of wating around even once the PS3 arives ... Sony being as awkward as ever and trying to launch a new madia type with thier Blueray, which is only Twin Speed means that loading times on the same data sizes will be DOUBLE that of the box360... and that without even factoring in that Blueray was designed so that the Sony developers could be lazy and use excesive amounts of space to achieve the same tasks!

At this point i'd also like to slip in a few comments about the "new" controller deisgn, firstly it looks like the initial PS2 controler, designed maybe 7 or 8 years ago! ... it also incorperates 'tilt' type technology developed by Microsoft and Logitech in 99 and dropped because it wasnt any good! .. hurah! ... oh, and they're bluetooth, so expect a few second wait everytime you press a button! lol

ok, ok ... I'm getting over excited with all this E3 thing ... I'm back off to watch some conferances on GameSpot! I've just been an avid xbox fan for some time now, and take ANY advantage to pick holes in the competition.

I have an Xbox 360. I'm with Sir Rawlins on this one.

It's all I need... but has unfortunately taken me away from magic practise for a wee while.

I am making a concious effort to switch it off occasionally, but it's so difficult.

Must get back to Fight Night 3...

:P

I am delighted that Sony have kept the same controller design! It is perfect, alot easier to use and less complex than Microsofts mostrosity (360 controller is alot better though). Why fix what isn't broken? I think it being bluetooth, is great! as for a big delay on button presses, I really do doubt that, I mean honestly.

I'm still reading up on stuff at the moment...

Hmm, I cant quite agree on the controller design, Bluetooh is an excelent technology, and i own a company that deals with the technology on a massive scale, unfortunatly I'm not quite sure that its right for a comtroller... although, i was exagerating the lag factor lol.

Sony really cant afford to lay low and produce an 'average' console at the moment, this generate could see the death of them if they are not carefull.

I mean, they're releasing a machine that has less functionality than the 360, along with trying to launch the new Blueray technology.

You also have to look that according to recent figures relreased last month xBox360 is the largest selling console ever! ... and by the time sony launches microsoft will have in excess of 10Million units in the field, and a massive number of Xbox Live Subscripbers.

Also notice the large developers changing sides? ... Rockstar, developers of the GTA series and long time selling point of the PS2 decide to launch the new version of GTA at the Microsoft Conferance this year, and discuss the concept of unique content for Xbox Live subscribers.

You've also got that the Launch of Windows Vista happends next year, and along with Windows Media center makes your Xbox an incredible device for entertainment and communications.

Can you see the developers of Linux doing the same for Sony?

I'm all up for healthy competition because seeing microsoft with a monopoly on the market wouldn't be a great thing ... but sony arnt even putting up a fight at the moment.

I mean, I'm sure i was reading that Nintendo were outselling the PSP by quite a bit after the launch rush.

I think Sony could be in deeper than they realize.

Also Mark, Fight Night is very entertaining, i lost a fair few hours lol .. Elder Scrolls has been my new puppy when i've had time though.

Kati, you're not on your own there! I am just dreading conversations with mates, though:

"I've got a 360"

"Oh, I've got a PS3"

"I've got a Wii"

Or, in the games shop:

"Can I have a Wii please?"

Still, it should be one hell of a console. I think that they should have stuck with Revolution; much better and exciting name, although props to Nintendo for being brave enough to go ahead with it. It's a name that you'd remember, that's for sure.

And the Wii's controller kicks ass :D.

Sir Rawlins - I wouldn't exactly say Sony isn't doing anything about the rise of the 360, and to say that Microsoft is beginning to gain a monopoly over the market is incredibly false at this point. To date, Sony still has over 60% of the video game market.

However, like you, I think the PS3 can be a huge problem for them. Technology-wise is one thing, but I think the biggest problem they're going to have is price. Microsoft has already confirmed they'll shave $50 off of the price of their console with the release of the PS3, which is still estimated at going between $500-600 per unit.

If this is the truth - bluetooth, better graphics, larger disc space might not be enough to overcome that obstacle.

And of course, the biggest problem you already mentioned. Developers are stepping across the lines - which is one of the last things Sony had. Capcom and Square/Enix already hopped over (a huge blow) with their franchise games. And now Rockstar. Sony better come up with something amazing....

Ah yes... the mighty Oblivion!

I have racked up nearly 50 hours gameplay on it so far, though I don't think the missus is as impressed as I know you'll be. They reckon there's 120+ hours gameplay in it, so I'm not halfway yet. I've only been doing missions... not even begun exploring the world myself yet.

Are you on XBox live Mr Rawlins? I got a free sub to it when I bought the console. If you are, I'll PM you my gamertag.

I also got Condemned, which was impressive, but way too short, and Call Of Duty 2, which the missus bought me. That's pretty cool too, very intense and looks great graphically. She bought herself Kameo, which looks good too, though it's not my cup of tea.

I think the "Wii" name is pretty clever. It has got people talking about it at least, and in a years time no body will think it's odd at all...

I think it's pretty cool what Nintendo is doing. I think they've realized that their time at the top has come and gone. They know they aren't the top manufacturer in the game, now. As a result, they've decided to branch out and actually starting to experiment with HOW we play games.

I realize it's not as sexy and graphically powerful as the PSP, but I still love my DS.

The new controller for the Wii sounds like it could be an incredible new aspect of gaming.

Not to mention the opportunity to play every game I used to play when I first got the NES. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've secretly been waiting for them to re-release Kid Icarus on one of their consoles.

Perhaps they see something well ahead of everyone else, and they're preparing for the next new shift. Who knows. Maybe in 5-10 years, they'll be back on top again because of this experimental phase. Regardless, they're still carving out their place, and each new system, no matter how behind the competition it is, I still find myself buying one.
