How to stop your own pulse?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I love this effect. Saw Randi do it with a nurse on each wrist, and had them clap out the rhythm which of course didnt synchronise....so ive adopted that technique which is great for impromptu at parties...even the pub.

Well I say impromptu.....i usually pop into the toilet to pluck up the balls to do it first.

You can pull it off within a couple of minutes. Though im not shure if its the correct way.. I doubt it - But fair to those who say to stop it may take 2 years of practice, the illusion of it being stopped can be learned in 5mins. And as others said it requires little skill depending on your method.

It amazes and worries me that a nurse would be fooled by this, anyone with any fundimental medical knowledge should understand the method. It's been used for years to stop bleeding (although it's now been taken out of the St. John's courses).

A few people have said about it being dangerous, it's not really as long as you don't keep the pulse stopped for too long, if you do you might find your arm falling off

I'd avoid using any complicated gimmicks to create the effect though, there are very easy and safe ways to do it.

the version i use is "thingy" free...very strong effect when done correctly...

...the method i use has also worried a doctor friend of mine fairly recently...but he was slightly tipsy at the time...

the version I use, i got from 'Tricks to Freak out your Friends' by Pete Firman, my method isnt 'thingy free' but iv done it with a short sleeve tee-shirt to my work colleagues in the pub, after work, i had one of our 1st aider's(who is a St Johns Medic) tap my pulse out! :-) was great! i used the heavy to rasping breathing, then silent breathing and my head drooping down 'trance like state!' i think its a really good effect, and is easily set up! (the method I use, anyway!) oh, and why have we dug up a really old post? lol

thingy free? where di you learn that? so is it *completely* (as in, no balls or guts needed) impromptu to perform?

absolutely...though i should mention the pulse is not taken at the wrist, but at the neck where it is stronger...you can also hold a pendulum and let it swing in time, and let your hand drop with a nice bang once you flatline as it were...

and all the time the person is tapping their hand on the table in time with it all..no stooges...seek and thee shall find...

This can be a really stunning effect, but may I suggest that if you're going to combine it with a living / dead identification trick you make sure that the people you're performing it on haven't lost anybody really recently.

Maybe its just my bad luck but I ended up conjouring a lot of tears from somebody last time I did this!

I hope Derren used the "non-gimmicked" method by Luke Jermay's (described on his DVD Skullduggery by Alakazam magic). I have however a suspicion that he used one of the more classic methods that magically is safer (in fact certain) , but medically slightly less safe (though I suppose my objection to for example "a b*** u**** the a**" is emotional rather than medical). It is probably as "safe" as "non-gimmicked nail into nose".

Magic is slight of mind!

Soren, "a b*** u**** the a**" is perfectly safe medically as long as it's not held for a prolonged period of time (longer than a few minutes) which I'm sure no body would do.

St John's used to teach the method as part of their first aid courses but had to stop because people were holding it for too long and damaging their patient's arms.

I found a free e-book on mentalism that features pulse stopping. Would it be wrong to post?

It might be - it depends on where it came from and whether it was all public domain stuff rather than copied or 'borrowed' from other performers’ work.

Hard to say, to be honest. It certainly seems to be written "from scratch" as it were, and there's an appendix of acknowledgements for some of the tricks. I can't say whether or not the site has the rights to distribute it for free, either. Shall I PM you?
