Table opening lines / effects?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Thanks. Your lack of spaces has made reading this thread very, very, very annoying (it breaks the site's layout, you see). But not as annoying as watching people pick on Mark unduly. Not that I'm saying there are valid reasons, or course...

And Mark, why do you bother?

I bother because I am on a divine mission to provide knowledge and guidance to the young and stupid. Especially if they come from Manchester and Essex.

Evidence of the said stupidity is that one of the urchins has asked what my opening is. I am not selling my opening remarks or my opening tricks. I am selling ME.

Of course I see why this mad villian or whatever he calls himself would find difficulty in selling himself. Nobody would want to buy him. And he has not made one spelling error. He has made several as has his uneducated colleague from the wilds of Essex.

Still we all make mistakes. I rather think both their mothers have made one.

I have already offered "positive proof". The proof is that if you ask anyone who was doing magic in the old days they would confirm that close up magicians in restaurants did not exist. I did not claim to be the first. I am far too modest and besides it wouldn't be true. I merely claim to be the second. I can prove I worked in Ley-Ons and in fact two magicians came in to see me there, one of whom is still around and quite well known in theatrical circles. I am quite sure that he would vouch for the fact that I was the second magician ever to work in restaurants in the UK.

The first was also from Manchester. Mick Chardo. It should not be hard for the irritating resident of that depressing city where they speak with funny accents to check up on Mick Chardo. If he asks some of the older Manchester magicians who he was they will no doubt also confirm that he was the first professional close up magician in Britain.

I will concede however that he was not the first traffic warden in the UK.

i concur with the holy psychic reverend, and I'm from Essex...most days i can barely walk upright...

lads, you should look past mark's goading (i personally find it most amusing) - in most posts he's offering you nearly three hundred years of wisdom...for free...occassionally he'll just say something provocative to have some fun...

and smithy - add some spaces and spelling to your post for gawd's sake...especially if you're cutting and pasting the same word over and over...

At least you do not come from Australia where they walk around upside down all day. It must be most uncomfortable.

As for "goading" I didn't start it. I merely made a factual statement and the goading first emanated from lower class Manchester and usually (but not on this occasion) higher class Essex.

I have looked up Mick Chardo on the internet. Not one bloody word. Unheralded and unsung. Of course he came from Manchester too. No wonder.

It wasn't goading, son - I said that one of your claims was unbelievable, which was apparently your cue to throw the rattle out of the pram (I'm sure you were the 2nd ever person to do that too).

300 years of wisdom isn't worth anything if it can't be backed up or proven. I'd even take printed anecdotal evidence on the whole "2nd ever" thing - I'm well known for my charitable nature, after all. And just so I'm not misunderstood here, I genuinely want to see the proof. I'd love to. It'd be fascinating. I just don't think claims like that can or should be made without being able to back them up properly.

I believe Cody Fisher stated he simply asks if they have any room for some magic?
