Impromptu effects

Postby gony » Jul 1st, '06, 11:54

Hi All,

I was out the other day in a situation where I didn't expect to be doing any magic and was asked by a member of my family if I could show some strangers a couple of tricks.

Without cards or other props I could only come up with three effects:

1. twisting arm routine

2. sinful - coin in soda can (money, pens and soda we easily sourced)

3. not sure what its called, but a bar trick where you hold a pound coin in each hand, close your fists, turn your hands over opening them palm down on the table and spec has to tell which hand is covering heads - needless to say one of the coins has joined the other

This made me realise that I could be doing with learning some more impromptu effects and I was hoping you guys could give some feedback on what would be worth while learning.

My favourite impromptu effects are;

1) One ahead using borrowed paper and a cup.

2) Piano trick with cards, matches, cocktail sticks, or beer mats.

3) Sheep and theives with borrowed coins

Best of all I don't even need to use them since these days I carry a Stealth Assassin wallet set to do three of the tricks they detail on the DVD's (www.stealthassassin.com) and in the same wallet I carry a MagiCard (Mark Jenest) and my own MRS card. So in all I got about 40 mins of solid magic and mentalism in my wallet at all times.

Andy.

INFUSION is a brilliant impromptu effect (ellusionist.com), all you need is a coin and a glass. But i like what Andy Hurst's idea with the Stealth wallet.

Time machine. I've said it before but it works every time. (pun) And you always have it strapped to your wrist ... funny that!

time machine requires no set up - it is a watch, full stop. You will need to reset it privately after you have demo'd it, but that's no harder than changing the time on your watch and takes just a couple of minutes. I usually perform the trick and then wander off somewhere.

For impromptu magic - get hold of Greg Wilson's 'On the Spot', or Encyclopedia of Impromptu magic.

Also - if you spend some time look at coin magic (Bobo's book, Al Schneider's stuff), rubber band magic (Dan Harlan, Elastrix II. Crazy Man's handcuffs) you should have a lot at your disposal.

Another thing you might want to consider is to take an 'emergency' kit with you wherever you go - but stuff that doesn't look like you brought it along - ie. gimmicks that the audience will never see: a tt, invisible loops/IT/Reel, a folding coin, flash paper etc. (Kind of like Malini carrying a block of ice around with him). Some other examples - things to produce: a minature rose, a mouse, cockroach, large spider, (just kidding - but you get the idea)

Get into the habit of looking around and seeing what you can use wherever you are - even if you don't use it. Keep a notebook and write down ideas and then try and make them work. For instance - if you go to a friend's house ora pub or something often - plant a coin or card or something in some obscure place for a production after a vanish (the next time you're there) etc. etc. Basically - train yourself to see oppurtunities - learn to pay attention

As for time machine - I'm personally not a fan. It costs a lot and there are a number of impromptu effects with borrowed watches that can be more powerful if presented right.

i practice what Taneuos preaches here. my sister gave me a "roll up" travel toiletry bag for my birthday. i travel a lot and take it with me almost everywhere i go. 2 TT's (a reg and king size) sit perfectly in the tooth brush slot, a couple of folded up silks, a couple of feet of rope, a small bag of "coins", a couple decks of cards... everything has a neat little place and the whole thing looks quite innocent. take it with you when travelling, heck, sometimes i even keep it in the glove box of my car.

I assume you mean the watch effects?

Hmm - I'm hesitant to post them on a thread for impromptu magic because they can be awesome effects and I'd hate for them to be presented as 'just another trick' - but I suppose I brought it up. :?

Banachek's PK Time - found on Banachek's site. My thinking is that if you're going to do a PK watch effect - start here, and follow his instructions religiously. He not only covers the technique, but the psychology, and everything you need to know (including a 'rant' about performing it badly  )

Patrick Kuffs has another angle on a watch effect (almost like a classic force using a watch) on his 'Mind Stunts'.
Richard Osterlind has a good effect on his mind mysteries series (can't remember which one - he also has a watch stop on the latest of the mind mysteries series).
Bob Cassidy has a stunning take on the PK time type effect in his book "Test Conditions" (although I've never got part of it to work :? - but I learnt a lot in the process).
Luke Jermay has an effect using suggestion where time stops (I haven't tried it, although I've used some of the ideas trying to get Bob Cassidy's version to work).
Uri Gellar has an effect where you put a broken watch on top of a televeision set and it starts working again, although I don't think he's published the method

stopped watches sometimes can restart because of a bit of dust or something in the works and ajolt will shift it. Equally the strong magnets that used to be in a tv would get a mechanical sprung wound watch going again.

I don't want to publish here how gellar gets such a good reaction to such stunts as it would give the game away to pying eyes.

Here's a challenge to follow this theme. You go into Mcdonalds and you have NO magic gimmicks with you.

name 10 tricks that you could perform with mcdonald's own throw away stuff (straws and the like)
