The Axis Color Change

Postby fireshower » Jul 10th, '06, 16:48

The Effect

Pass your hand over the deck of cards and you get a color change, no contact required. I filmed a short clip of myself doing this change.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqd0CCPx258

Cost

11.95 Dollars (sorry guys, I'm from the USA so I have to use a currency converter) or 9.38 Euros

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

I'd rate this a 2 but since there's one "sleight" I'll have to give it a 3 based on the rubric above.

Review

The Axis color change is, as you can see, a very beautiful color change. The problem is, it's very angle sensative, as said on the Ellusionist website. That being said, this change can only be done for one or two people and they must be to a specific side. Cleanup is really not difficult, but you are in a sticky position if you bleed a little bit. And let me say that it's rather easy to bleed on this trick. You have to spend a long time in front of a mirror and video camera in my opinion to get all possible angles down. Because of the angles issue as well as the small number of people that it can be performed in front of, this trick is not very versatile, however it can be absolutely amazing to that one person you might be doing it for. It's a very smooth change in which you don't even touch the deck with your right hand, not more to want.

Overall

In closing, I think the Axis Color Change is quite innovative, however perhaps too much so. The motion is easy enough, however it's easily detected when surrounded or even if your angles are slightly off, making it difficult to use at times. I have used it on one person at a time and I must say, the results are not too bad. Personally, I'd rather use a classic color change because the Axis is quite angle intensive, but that's just my opinion.

I give this trick a 3/10 for usefulness but a 9/10 for sheer beauty

Overall Score: 6/10

I bought this and it turned out it was a color change I was messing with I stumbled upon myself. (I basically reversed another change... Id say which one but that might become a bit revealing...)

I found out when meshing the two ideas a bit more, and when practicing it ALOT you can signifigantly reduce the angles and have an almost instant clean up.

Before then, I thought it was useless, but now I actually use it. Mainly because, it is often rare that I am performing from only 1 angles worth of people.

Anyway.

Good review.

The change is over a hundred years old. Ellusionist knew this but put it up for sale anyway.

Personally for the same effect but done better would be the Ego Change that Daniel Garcia does. And yes I know that he is copying another change but that is the newest place I have seen it.

To EuanBingham: That is E's standered MO. They are always selling tricks by themselves for insane prices that are a little different than one invented decades ago.

Personally I dont really find it a practical color change. Granted, I only watched the preview but I am certain of what he's doing (I've never called it an Axis before) It's a narrow angle to control and I find getting clean without reversing it is not very smooth and hard to keep quite. It doesnt look worth the money to me. Anyone good enough to perform this smoothly should be able to see whats being done for the preview if they don't already know it.

Or just watch all the kids flashing as they try to do it on "you tube" (man, I hate that. )

I got this Axis change and I wasnt so happy with it. I mean, its more like a "extra" thing with cards. It looks good in front of mirror but very hard to adjust when performing. The idea is good, but it is hard to perform it.
