Profile - Avatar Control Panel 
You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

ok step 1 click profile at the top of the page
step 2 sroll as far down as possible on the profile page
step 3 put the image link in to the image box
step 4 click ok
DONE

Chill out...
Under the heading Talkmagic.co.uk there's 6 little subscreens you can choose. "FAQ", "Search", "Usergroups", "Profile", "You have no new messages" and "Log out"
Click on the one that says Profile.
Then scroll right the way down to the bottom of the page that comes up.
There's a heading that says "Avatar Control Centre". In there you can upload your avatar as long as it reaches certain requirements (size, dimensions etc)

click on profile at the very top of the page... just left of the message link - then go right to the bottom of that page to get an avatar on

Are you using the profile button at the TOP of every page (the correct one) or are you clicking the profile button in the post windows?
If you choose the TOP one (where you see "Talkmagic.co.uk, FAQ, Search, Usergroups, PROFILE, You have no new messages, Log out")
you will find your avatar control at the foot.
