Beginner-ish card effects

Postby londonletmedown » Jul 18th, '06, 21:35

Hi! What are some simple but effective card effects that I could achieve without a gaffed deck?

I'm in the process of perfecting my double under cut, DL, hindu shuffle, etc. and am looking for beautiful effects that don't require very difficult handling. I'm sure this has been covered before, but as usual, I'm having difficulty getting precise results with the search function. If someone feels that this post is redundant, please be so kind as to link me to an appropriate topic.

The only actual effect that I have mastered (excluding color changes and basic sleights) is Renegade (via Penguin). Watch a demo if you're unfamiliar with the effect, this might give you a basic guide to measure my skill level.

As always, thanks for your time.

Luke

RRTCM is an essential purchase. If you want some quick results, buy an Easy to Master card Miracles by Michael Ammar DVD. Im sure there is reviews on here already.

Im currently working through "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" in hardback. A little hard to get hold of but full of material. And all pretty easy.

I thrid that.

I own the book and have read it, it is an awsome book which teaches virtually all the basic sleights, and tricks which use the sleights you 'just' learnt in that chapter.

Also i would suggest 'Scarne on card Tricks' - which is full off 'self workers' which have a huge WOW factor to the layman.

But before you buy any of these books check out their reviews on this forum.

Well, let me say that I opted for Giobbi's series instead of Royal Road only because I heard it was a more updated and comprehensive version of the same basic material (and I leafed through Royal Road and had a bit of trouble following.) Was this a decent purchase? I got a good bargain so the price wasn't a huge deal. To be honest, I haven't had the time to really sit down with them and do any serious studying.

I guess what I hope to get from this post is some specific effects and not only general learning tools. As much as I would like to, I just don't have the time to read through pages upon pages of instruction for every effect only to find out that the method/effect doesn't work for me.

So with that in mind, are there any specific effects that I look into that fall into my general skill level?

Card College is an excellent series of books. Addictive though in the way that you just have to get the series!

Ok, you have bought the set then! A wise investment, they will keep you occupied for a very long while. Do yourself a favour though, work through them a book at a time, and a chapter at a time. I did this and although I thought I was going over stuff that I thought I knew very well, its amazing how you force yourself to re evaluate your whole handling of a deck.

Also do yourself (and your bank balance a favour) just work through these books and resist the temptation to spend more of your hard earned cash on any other gimmicky tricks for a while. I genuinly believe that Card College will make you a better more competent cardician.

Good luck!

I understand if you do not have the time to spend hours trawling through the pages of a book to find some killer card effect, so I would say get the Royal Road To Card Magic on 5 disk DVD. You will be able to see the effects performed for you and you can then decide which ones would suit your level, having the books are also a great companion to this set. I allways have a book or two in my possesion at work, when I get bored I go to the loo for a 15 minute read! (is it just me?)

I made my wife dissapear just by arguing with her!!!

Yup its just you mate , but over the past 2-3 days of it being so hot i have wrecked a brand new pack of cards becuase its sooo hot and my hands get sweaty. And you say you wanted effects i can give you some decent ones to learn, all 4 tricks on born to perform are fairly decent, and volumes 1-4 are the better series of michael ammars easy to master card miracles, i have them all but i would defently say, the earlyer volumes are the better ones, i think he runs out of tricks in the end.

Also that is a good invested buying the card college series, i havent read them myself but have read many reviews, which all say the books are brilliant, but also if i was you use RRTCM, it does teach you very useful stuff.

Good luck with your learning

That should have read illusions, not ellusions. Oh well.

Nah, I've always thought it was a cheap way to get a reaction. Of course, this is only my personal opinion, but I feel it's misleading and degrading to the spectator(s). Oh well. I get much more out of it learning slight of hand regardless.
