Hi guys,

I'm getting married in just over a month and have been trying to work out how I can get some magic into my Reception Speech!

I wondered about doing something with my speech notes - maybe the production of a few items whilst looking for them - pulling out all sorts of 'wrong' things such as an appearing cane or silks, sponge rabbits...

Or maybe with your help I could come up with something better!

Your suggestions would be gratefully received!

Mother in law jokes are very important.

Something in rhyme?

Classical poetry? There was a young girl called Venus .... etc

Or the use of a 'Pad'. Pre show to get people to guess where the honeymoon is - using a pad ...etc. then announce peoples thought, like a competition, in your speech ?

Talk to Bananafish and Slippery Penguin about doing any magic - they've both been through this process in recent times and have direct experience of what and what not to do.

Personally, I wouldn't attempt any magic during the speech. It's an important part of the day and you will only get ONE attempt at it. If it goes wrong then you'll end up regretting it and the new Mrs Last Deck probably won't appreciate it.

I recommend saving your magic until AFTER the formalities are over.

I've thought long and hard about my own speech (only 4 weeks away!) and I have decided that:

1. I will be nervous enough without worrying about magic
2. I think it is the wrong place and wrong time
3. Weaving something magical into a speech is difficult at the best of times. Personally, I am vouching for the following 'link' to magic as an alternative...

"As most of you know, I dabble in magic. I've done so for about 25 years. But there's one trick which I still haven't learned yet, and that is working out the magic I feel whenever I am with xxxx."

Soppy, I know, but so is the rest of my speech!

I like Seiges idea. And if you must use magic, maybe start off saying what he said, or something like it...

"As many of you know I have been into magic for x amount of years. And I know I have annoyed many of you with it. So I am sure you were all afraid I would use it in my speech, but I decided not..." blah something like that.

All the while be producing stuff incidentally. Like reach behind your head and produce a boquet of roses and hand them off like it was nothing and continue the speech as if you werent interrupted. Or maybe even give them a weird look and hand them off or something. I dunno. Just tossing out ideas.

I would just like to agree that it might not be the best time to do some magic. I got married last year and was thinking the same.

I decided that I didn't want people to think that I was using the moment as an excuse to show-off or give out any sort of feelings like that.

I would suggest maybe one v. small trick/production may be ok. Like the rose idea above.

Just don't over-play it in any way.

and... guys soon to be married. Try not to worry about nerves. I am willing to bet that on the day you will find yourself unbelievably calm and just so happy that you won't be nervous.

... actually in all honesty, getting married was the best thing I ever did.

Just a shame I didn't realise at the time, that I was getting married to her entire family as well!

Two women are sitting next to each other on an airplane. One is in her twenties, the other in her fifties. The younger woman says to the elder,

"Excuse me, but I couldn't help notice that beautiful diamond ring you're wearing. It's just incredible." The older woman replies,

"Thank you. This is the famous 'Plotnick Diamond' you know."

"The Plotnick Diamond? I've never heard of it."

"Oh yes, it's very famous. The Plotnick Diamond."

"Well," says the younger woman, "it really is beautiful. I would give anything to have a diamond like that."

"NO! Don't even say that!" exclaims the older woman. "Believe me, darling, you do not want to own this diamond!"

"But why not?"

"Because there is a terrible curse attached to this diamond, that's why."

"A curse?!" the younger woman asks.

"Yes, a curse. The terrible 'Plotnick Curse.' A curse so awful and so horrible that I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!"

"What kind of curse could possibly be so terrible?"

To which the older woman replies, lowering her voice slightly, "Mister Plotnick."
