Best card to wallet (wallet?)

Postby katrielalex » Aug 15th, '06, 09:25

Hi all -

Apologies in advance if this thread already exists but I couldn't find it (again...).

I need a decent wallet so I thought I might upgrade to a card to wallet. So, my question is, "Which wallet should I get?"

A couple of conditions:

1. I don't need a peek wallet, business card holder, etc. The Stealth Assassin looks very nice but it's £100 and I don't need all the other features. And in that vein, I don't really need a Mullica wallet although if there is a really good one out there...

2. If I do get a CTW it will be my everyday wallet so it does need to be somewhat usable (e.g. place for cards, cash, notes...) and it needs to stand up to day to day use.

Any suggestions? Thank you very much in advance!

Kati

Looks nice - I like the gimmick :) It is a no-palm though so it's not as clean as can be - still, less room for error that way ;). Do you use/like it?

EDIT: Help, it's growing on me! Aargh....

Cheers,

Kati

I have the Real Man's Wallet (Steve Draun) and I think it's the dogs. It's a very smart, black leather, palm-loading hip wallet. I use it as my every-day wallet. This is the fourth C2W wallet I've had as I kept searching for the right one, but now I don't so much as look at other wallets, never mind load anything into one.

Have you got a web link for this?

I thought about the Real Man's wallet but a) it's from the US so that's extra shipping, customs, VAT, etc and b) it's $50 which is at the high end of what I wanted to pay.

After a couple hours research I think I'm leaning towards the Simplex Card 2 Wallet - it seems to have a lot going for it including a) it's made by Dobson! b) it has a coin purse which seems to be lacking in a lot of wallets c) it's available for £17 in the UK which is very good!

The Dobson wallet doesn't look much like an everyday wallet. And it looks suspiciously like a no-palm load (which you said you weren't keen on). The SD wallet is pricey but still good value.

If you're really keen on the Dobson wallet you'd be better getting it from here as you get the wallet, the Simplex C2W routine and a loa dof other routines for the wallet for £19. I've used the dealer before and recommend them.

As the title of the book implies though this isn't a wallet you'll be using for everyday and it's definitely no-palm (advertised as no sleights needed!).

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with Zs. I use one myself sometimes but be aware that it doesn't meet the criteria you set in your earlier posts.

PS I didn't pay any customs charges on my RM wallet and the postage is $5.

Well, if you do get the Z I recommend you look up the Phantom Aces routine by Euan Bingham. It's in the Close Up Scotland compilation and also Quirky Card Magic by Euan, both available from his site. It's a great routine. And he's not paying me to say that.

Edit:
Hey! You just deleted the post I replied to!!

Oh help, they're all good. I feel like I'm drowning in wallets 8).

I'm somewhat confused as to the Simplex wallet as I was under the impression that it was not a Z-fold which I definitely don't want. I was looking at this photo

Image

and this quote (from here):

Now we come to the Simplex Wallet. This is made and marketed by Viking magic (Vikingmagic.com) for $40.00. This wallet, like the Mirage looks like a regular hip-pocket wallet. Well almost. It is made of nice smooth black leather and is very, very slim. Open it and you find one credit card slot to the right. The left is blank leather (an ID window for a drivers license would have been nice here, in fact I plan to glue one on soon). The bill section is directly behind this. It runs across the back. Behind the bill section, to the right is a zippered compartment. It is in this compartment that the card is found.

which seem to mean that it is not a z-fold but then I might be wrong.

Mirage Wallet - no-palm

Pros: visual, widely recommended, cheap

Cons: somewhat of a knack to use, possibly fragile

Real Man's Wallet - palm

Pros: well-made, recommended :)

Cons: relatively expensive, US only

Simplex Card 2 Wallet - no-palm

Pros: cheap, comes with routine (though I already have one in mind), coin purse

Cons: possibly not as practical as the others

Gah!

Kati

EDIT:
Hey! You just deleted the post I replied to!!
The post delete and edit features can be very annoying at times . Sorry. I had missed your second post about the Z-fold wallet so I deleted mine and made this one instead.

EDIT MK II: Does the RMW have a coin purse?

Well, if the Z wallet looked like a Z wallet in the picture it probably wouldn't be terribly useful...

It is one though. The clue is that the Simplex routine is in the Z6 book which describes 6 routines for a Z wallet. That's what I meant when I said it doesn't look like an everyday wallet.

The Mirage is very good but I wouldn't recommend carrying it around in your back pocket due to the fragility issue you mention. Excellent if you're only going to be using it from a jacket though.

Last question! Does the Real Man's Wallet have a coin purse in/on it somewhere?
