Performing to the over-50s

Postby Tomo » Aug 17th, '06, 12:27

I was at a 57th birthday bash last night, and the birthday boy asked me to perform for some of his friends. Things were going nicely and I was asked to finish with my expanded version of Brown's Perfect Coin Prediction. Basically, people select a coin from their loose change (not just a 10p), and I go down the line telling them the mint years. It gets a nice, eerie reaction and some bizarre thories that I'm only too happy to let the specs explore .

Well, I went through the intro patter about coins picking up personalities throughout their lives and how it might just be possible to detect things about them, such as their mint years. But when I asked the group to note the years, they all started blinking and trying to hold their choices up to the light, at arms length, etc. It turned out that no one, not one single person, had brought their reading glasses!

Luckily, I hadn't used my ID, so I changed tack and finished on an impossible prediction. But boy oh boy, did I learn a lesson!

always worth investing in dishonest abe trick as you have an excuse to have a magnifying glass avalable for thoughs who have vanity issues.

You could always use it to your advantage, so if you got one wrong they wouldnt know, you could just say no thats a 5 not a 3 if you had your glasses you would see that.

And if there eyes arent that good, you can buy cards for people with problems with seeing.

Hmmm. Great ideas lads. It's surprising what someone else will see when you're too close tothe problem yourself. I'll get a small magnifier, but the idea of simply bluffing my way through sounds like fun! I got hung up on the idea that I was the very last person who should be looking at the dates.

another tip with the magnifyer and a written prediction is you can take the coin back and switch it placing it on the glass as you hand the magnyfier to the spec.
then after some byplay getting them to examine the crown or watever get them to check the date of there coin  it matches your prediction. :P
