A new slight

Postby humdai » Aug 21st, '06, 23:17

Hi

I have been learning close-up card magic for about 3-4 years. I have got alot of enjoyment from the hobby and am keen to give back to the community.

There is a slight that I worked out that I have as yet not been able to find in any books and the professional magicians that I have spoken to have not known it either.

I would like to share it with the community but the magic world appears to be a copyright minefield and I need to be sure that it is really a new slight and not something that is already known.

I am also looking for advice on the best way to release the information.

If anybody can advise from experience I would appreciate the wisdom.

Steve

I'd PM a mod and ask if you can send a description. They're very discrete and knowledgable.

Mmm well if you've been into magic for 3 - 4 years I'm sure you've read up on lots of magical books & if you haven't come across this sleight anywhere maybe you have invented it.

If you feel inclined to publish it I'd suggest you do so in the secret area first thus if anyone recognises it they can say so. If it does happen that it's recognised you can still share it as a useful sleight & just give the credit when known, or maybe you've modified it & deserve co credit.

In the meantime without going into the workings, what does your sleight achieve. If you can't describe it without to much detail feel free to PM me.

What does it accomplish? If it's fairly obscure (controls the second-from bottom card to the top while reversing the third and seventh cards) it should be much easier to pinpoint than if it's, say, a top control.

EDIT: If you want it in the MO area I'd be happy to put it there for you.

It is an easy way to get a card from the bottom to the top, but looks like a flourish so rather than hide the move, you draw attention to it! :) Quite neat really.

Tomo: Thanks for the idea, katrielalex has agreed to post it in the MO area so I will see what comes of that before disturbing the moderators.

If you're just getting it from bottom to top, you can do that with an overhand shuffle. That way it looks like you've mixed the deck. There wouldn't be much point to your method unless it doesn't mix up the rest of the cards in the deck.

Hi again -

The general consensus seems to be kudos to you for thinking of a new sleight :)

Unfortunately there has been a lot of work on top controls so most people are probably going to stick with a double undercut or an overhand shuffle

:)

Thanks Kati

Looks like time to take it further.... maybe run cards to stack the deck easily for some counting tricks.

Time to play. ;)

Please pass on my thanks to those who took the time to answer my query.
