Hi,
Some of you may already know me from MH, but for those that don't.
I'm 16, I would say that I am an amatuer at magic (I really hate that word, but it's the best way of describing my magical knowledge), having only been taking it seriously for under 6 months.
My main branch of magic at the moment is Mentalism, backed up by some cards and a little coin stuff (yeah, I know its random, its just things I liked the look of and decided to have :P ), I'm currently looking into Bizarre magic as I love the whole creepy magic thing.
I'm a huge Derren Brown fan and the whole dressing things up as phsychology thing has worked wonders for some of my effects *cough* ID *cough*.
So yeah, thats about it, I look forward to posting here, looks like a great community :)

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Don't hate that word! The origin of the word "amateur" comes from latin or French, quite related to the word "amour" which means "love". So, an amateur is someone who "loves what he's doing". Ergo: You love your work, so you do it, even without getting paid... :D

I had a nice talk with one of the "old" pioneer magicians here in Iceland, the other day. He told me that he loved magic at first, but then he got famous here in Iceland in the 70's, performed on TV, on stage, clubs, parties, wherever and for a few years this was his only job – performing magic.
He got fed up, he dreaded each performance as he changed into his outfit. He lost his love for it, magic became like "tragic" for him, so he got out of it and got a job as a salesman.
Now, he has been "free" for 20 odd years and his interest is re-appearing, little by little.
This is what can happen when you stop being amateur and become professional :) You have to keep your "love = amour" alive.
