I've performed Sub-trunk some time ago on a talent show in my school (won first place if I may brag^^), made the crate out of plywood, and instead of climbing on top of the crate (which would have collapsed if I did so) I stood next to it. And the curtain was lifted by my two friends, cost me about 30$ for all materials, and worked like a charm, only the change was maybe half a second longer then if it has been done with my on top .
Now, you are talking about street conditions, are you talking about performing surrounded, half a circle crowd, or stage style with only people in a line at the front?
Surrounded is really hard, you need a circular curtain, and the lifting would have to be done in stages if you don't want the change to bee very long, and also the trunk itself needs to look normal from all ways. Really not for a beginner in illusions or Sub-trunk as itself.
half a circle is almost as sensitive as being surrounded (all depends on the angle the people spread on), if it's really half a circle (180 degrees) you have to do it like you would if you were surrounded, if it's 90 degree or so, it almost like stage conditions, so you are more free with the way you perform, but still need to check the angles.
