Destroying cards

Postby greedoniz » Aug 31st, '06, 16:25

Helloooo,

I'm currently working on the classic intercessor routine where the corner is torn off the chosen card, the spectator keeps the corner, the rest of the card is destroyed, the card is then found elsewhere and the corners match. yadda yadda yadda.
My current problem actually lies in the destroying of the card as I have found it quite difficult and a tad smelly to actually set fire to bicycle stock due to it's plastic coating. The only other option is to tear it up completely but that leaves the "what to do with the pieces" question.

Has anyone got any ideas other than using napalm or sulphuric acid?

you could rip it all up and throw it in a near by bin.
rip it up and throw it into the wind.
rip it up and eat it. lmao.
but yeh, may be smelly, but fire is ya best bet. lol.

Krazy - I don't think you've read the original post properly. Greedoniz would like suggestions on how else to destroy the card, other than burning because it's too smelly.

Would it be possible to incorporate a vanish rather than a 'destroy' of the card? It'll add an extra stage in the effect and may help to build to the climax.

Even if it's something like putting it in a card box, putting the card box in your pocket and pulling out an empty one before revealing the 'original' card.

Not the best method, but a method nonetheless.

What about a mini shredder - I think they started making them after the whole Enron thing - in case of emergency or something. If they haven't started making them - someone should. There could be quite a market for them with magicians.

You can rip the card into small pieces, then take out some flash paper, and pretend to wrap it around the card pieces (while actually palming them, or stealing them in any other way you like), then ditch them when you are going into your pocket for the match book/lighter.
I find this method very good because it still keeps the fire aspect in the routine, but makes it even stronger because people can see it's not an ordinary burn and the card totally burn/disappear without a trace... Again a thing that make the re-appearance and restoration more convincing (because a magical vanish gives sort of an "explanation" for the magical appearance and restoration) .

Another solution will be to just vanish the pieces, and you can still use some flash paper, or just plain burning paper to give a reason for the vanish (like placing the pieces in a devil's hanky, giving it to a spectator to hold, light some flash paper and throw it to the hanky to make the card disappear).
Another way, but that gives you less freedom with the revelation is just switching the torn pieces with the restored card (and you can do that in the spectators hand, steal the restored card, do a shuttle pass and put it in the spectators hand, and from there on it's all performance.

I think that's much better than my shredder idea :)

Thanks for all your input.

I do like the idea of the mini shredder as it is a great visual gag plus I can then maybe use the flash paper idea.

On the other hand I am a bit concerned about certain people, who shall remain nameless, who seem intent on encouraging me to burn things

Burn it! BURN IT! BURN IT!!!

Blame my parents, you see. They don't want me to use flash paper so I have to make do with getting other people to use it
