A few of my tricks

Postby Mooch » Sep 1st, '06, 11:25

Hey,
Here are a few more of my tricks. I made up the methods for doing these, but I'm pretty sure that they will probably have been thought up before, as they are simple effects with very simple methods. I'm sure that you will probably be able to figure them out pretty quickly. If you have seen one of the tricks before, please let me know.
Thanks.

Flyover change

Signs

In this trick, the cards tell me what the chosen card is. The first tells the colour, the second the value, and the third shows the suit. It's a little difficult to follow without sound/explanation.

If you have any comments or advice, it would be welcomed warmly :D
Thanks.

Okay i had watched all of them and as you said i had figured them out by watching them the first time, but it will fool laymen for sure dont worry ;)

My hints for the hole trick : try to be natural with the right hand this will sell the restore effect better as holding the hand so tightly closed ,hopefully you understand what i mean ;)

the sign trick was pretty funny even without the sound ,but you should give the deck some false cuts before revealing every card for the identifiying of the choosen card.and a patern like : i will try to identify your card with other cards...then false cut and reveal the first card.this card will tell me the color of you card ...its a black card right?then cut again ..reveal the next card.
okay this card will tell me the suite of your card..its a (for example) spade isnt it? then to identify the value cut again and reveal the last card ;)
Thats how i would handle it.

keep on practicing mate :)
i hope those hints will help you.
greetings Jerry

Catch - This trick was alright, but for some reason it just didn't work for me. There are existing effects that use a throw like that to "Catch" two selections. You might want to look into something like that for inspiration. I can't recall the name of the move, but when I do I'll let you know.

Flyover Change - Your handling for this was very unnatural. If you're supposed to be holding one card, it should look like it. Your hands constantly went through a squaring motion - if you're displaying one card, what are you squaring? Bear that kind of thing in mind when trying to sell this kind of situation.

Signs - This was alright, but as cosmic pointed out - you should have some prep before the effect begins. Shuffle, cut, all that - otherwise it just looks like you set up the top of the deck. I'm not sure if you're aware of the effect, but you might want to look into "untouched". Your effect throws in a third (and I feel unnecessary) card. Untouched uses two cards to reveal a previous prediction. Great effect.

Healed Hole was decent - and cosmic already said what needs work in your handling. It should also be mentioned that your hand moving out of frame severely undercuts the rest of the effect. There are ways to perform this without having to be so overt. Granted, the angle of the video hindered many of your options. Try working on different ways to handle your dirty work, and perhaps shoot the video from a new angle.

All-in-all, you're on track. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, both of you. I really appreciate any comments or advice.
I've definately got to work on my handling, as with another couple of tricks. I'm not too good at concealing things yet, as I have tiny hands and I guess I just seen some more practise.
cosmicsecret, thanks for the false cut suggestion, I'll try that out in a while. I'm sure that would definately improve the reactions :)
Thanks again. I'm glad I joined this forum, it's full of great and really helpful people.

Edit: As for the camera angle, I've just got to clear some space on my desk, or find somewhere else to perform it. I've got so many cards and folders and files and things scattered around the place at the moment, it's getting a little out of hand.

I've thought up a couple more tricks, and I've redone the Signs one with your suggestion. I think that it does look a lot more convincing, so thank you :)
You will probably be able to work out how to do my new tricks to, but comments, etc. would be appreciated.
Thanks, once again :)

Signs 2

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2558554762092106307

Appearance

Using a slightly newer deck of cards than the red ones. This is actually a whole deck this time, I was missing half the cards from my red one. I've got a couple more Bicycle decks when I'm done with these blue ones too.
Anyway, I'm sure you will be able to figure this one out almost instantly. I still need more practise covering up my passes.

A King for a King

Another simple one I'm sure you will be able to figure out. Nothing happens when my hand goes off-camera, by the way. That's just my poor performance skills.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3143279318869521397

Ghostly

I'm useless with names :P
Anyway, I thought this up a couple of minutes ago. I know that there are a few other tricks like this, where the card just appears out of the deck, but I've not seen one where it appears face up. I'm sure that there are a couple where it does though, I'm not very well read, magic-wise, so I apologise for that in advance.

Edit: Added Signs 2. Google have finished "processing" it.

Appearance was done well. Your pass wasn't too bad. The King for a King trick looks like a sleightly (heh) modified a common color change (over used by Jay Sankey) but not bad.

The last trick needs significant improvement. Think how you want the spectator to think you are handling the deck. And modify your handling until that is how it looks. If it is not possible to obtain that, then maybe you should change something about the trick. (Speaking generally mainly...) It is an decent idea, just needs much work. Though I do think it would be somewhat obvious to many laymen.

Keep up the good work. You are quite the busy beaver.

Thanks again i1011i, I'm glad it looks like I'm improving.
I did a quick video of the last one before I went out, so that may account for some of the bad handling. I think the rest is just due to my lack of practise.
I've had quite a lot of time to think up these tricks, as it's currently my summer holiday, and I'm not doing much at the moment as most of my friends are still on holiday. That, and I also love trying to perform magic tricks, even if (as you've seen) they don't go too well ;)
I really appreciate you spending your time viewing my videos, and then offering advice. It's very nice of you, so thanks again.

I've added the Signs 2 video to the post above. Google finally finished processing it. Also, as promised in another post, here are my needle tricks:

Needle through hand

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9052805829874617147

Needle through neck

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8672815744711802079

The needle through neck is a variation of my needle through hand trick. The first few seconds of the video is supposed to be me showing my mouth empty, but you can't really see inside it in the video.
Neither of the two tricks use any gimmicks or super difficult sleights or anything. They are both pretty simple to do, otherwise I wouldn't be able to perform them for you ;)
I'll edit this post when the needle through hand trick has finished being processed.
Thanks again for reading/watching.

I have a comment about Healed Hole. I was thrown off by the fact that either I missed seeing you fold the paper in half in the beginning of the effect or the restored paper is twice the size of the original.

Ah, the paper is folded, but I forgot to show that at the beginning
It works the same way as my card change, Kolisar, so I'm sure you can see how it works now ;)
Thanks again for all the comments, I really do appreciate you taking the time to both watch and comment on my videos :)

Needle through the Neck:
Looks good. It may be the video angle but the needle being pushed into your neck was not visible shortly after you started pushing it into your neck. It seemed obstructed by both hands. If you dull and shorten the tip (to prevent it from actually peircing the skin) you may be able to remove your left hand during the pushing process and make the effect a little more visual. But, I must say, good trick. I can see it getting good reactions.

Thanks again Kolisar :)
The needle through hand video has finished being processed, so I'll add the link in a second.
About my hands obscuring it, that is mostly my poor performing (again) and partially the camera angle. I'll try to rectify that in my actual performances.

Thanks Dominick, I'm glad you like them. I'm pretty proud of them, since I've not been in magic too long. It makes me really happy to see that people enjoy watching my tricks :)
