Tricks for Beginners.

Colour Vision MM
3.95 from www.eMagicTricks.Co.Uk

The Effect.
This trick consists of a small plastic box and a cube that has a different colour on each of its 6 faces.

The spectator places the cube into the box with a chosen colour facing upwards and then puts the lid back on the box and hands it back to the magician.

The Magician then puts the box behind his/her back and asks the spectator to concentrate on the colour. After a few seconds of contemplation the box is brought around to the front and the magician will be able to successfully guess the chosen colour.

Review.
As a beginner I found this is a very nice mentalism effect. I especially liked it, as it is not only effective and extremely easy to perform but is also very cheap – which can never be a bad thing (unless of course it’s an engagement ring – in which case my girlfriend would say it is an extremely bad thing indeed :) ).

One of the things that makes it so clever for me is the fact that there is a little behind your back work that makes the audience convinced that they know how it’s done. This makes it even less likely for them to spot the real secret. A secret that once you know is blindingly obvious.

The objects are 100% examinable afterwards, by which time the audience just gets more confused as they now see that they were absolutely wrong in their initial assumption.

Difficulty.
1/5
Very easy indeed. A little misdirection at one point – but apart from that no real skill required at all. So far no one I have performed it to has come close to guessing how it’s done.

Rating.
I would give this a rating of 8/10 – but remember I am a still a novice.

Bottom Line.
I would certainly recommend this very highly as a trick to buy when you are starting out although it possibly lacks some sophistication for professional magicians.

In saying this the same website also sells an extremely nice wooden version manufactured by Yonezo Mikame, for £27.95. Maybe a little expensive – but the craftsmanship looks beautiful.

This is a trick I will carry around with me ready for that "show us a trick" moment.

I found myself using this quiet a lot, and consequently I recently bought the Mikame "deluxe" version.

I have to say it is wonderfully crafted and a real pleasure to use, so much more so than the cheaper MM version. It also came with a slightly different handling that makes the whole trick (for me) much more convincing and dispels some of the "behind the back" concerns I had before.

As to whether it is worth the extra money, well that's going to be up to you. I certainly have no regrets.

You're right Tom, some of the standard okito box handling can be used with this. The deluxe version is actually a fair bit bigger than the original - but not too big.

The Mikame routine suggests that you actually turn your back on the spectator as they make their selection, and ask them to hand it to you whilst it is still behind your back (so you can't be accused of cheating), and by the time you turn around and bring it to the front - nothing else needs to be done. This really does work very well.
