TalkMagic IRC Chat Room?

Postby Kolisar » Sep 2nd, '06, 17:56

Does TalkMagic have an IRC channel? Are they considering one (or perhaps a few to mirror the open and restricted forums)? If not, does anyone know of any?

It might be a cool way to discuss magic [i am a fan of IRC as i am on several chats about PSPs] but there will be too many people just asking how tricks are done.

The room could be set to invisible, or even invite only -- perhaps requiring a PM on these boards to the moderator to gain access.

This is something I have a certain amount of experience of.

Prob the best thing to do is use an IRC network which has network based channel services. A good example is freenode.net, just type

/msg chanserv help and follow the instructions.

If you need help however please feel free to PM me.

Steve

Please bear in mind that TalkMagic already is a discussion Forum so it's very unlikely that such addditional facilities will be introduced. What's wrong with discussing magic on TM as we already do?

I agree with Mandrake. The replies are almost instant...give or take 5 or ten minutes. I don't like the idea of a chatroom. This idea has already been brought up and has been shot down. Many people on this forumn find it to be a bad idea.

Thanks,

I am a member of a different site site (non-magic) that has an IRC channel. I agree that the site is a good way to discuss magic, but sometimes the live intereaction is beneficial. There is nothing wrong with the way we discuss magic on TM. I thought that an IRC channel may enhance the TM experience.

In what way is it beneficial?

In a community aspect.

It's not so much a matter of hopping on there to hear about the newest Sankey illusion, or such thing -- more a matter of mere interaction with people you share a common interest with. Most IRC chats aren't fully limited to their subject matter, which provides a more open and interesting area to get to know those you associate with on a daily basis.

It's not a necessity, by any means.

But it's a way people can get to know one another better, for sure.

I agree with Jim and Kolisar. It is the whole 'Live' aspect of IRC that makes people o on and chat. As there are people that will give you a responce in seconds. In fact, it wouldn't have to be magic reltated at all. As the 'doves head' off topic section is so big, we could have an off topic IRC. I too am on another forum [non magical related] that has an IRC and a friend site to that has an IRC for the specific subject and an Off Topic chat. The off topic is way more popular.

As i said before, i will be mroe than happy to help and could help moderatoe the chat [:D] as i am on my computer quite alot.

well im going to have to agree on the side of the "we dont need one". On another well known magic site they had an external site with a chatroom on it and for the first day or so it was good with some people using it but after that the novelty faded a bit and to cut a long story short its now "dead" so whats the point of going to all the hassle of setting it up just so a couple of you can have a chat (which can easily be done on msn or yahoo messenger etc) for a couple of days before you get bored with it?

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..
