Where can I buy a QUALITY folding coin ... ? Thanks

Postby l-ule » Sep 4th, '06, 12:59

Hello everyone.

I just bought a folding 10p on ebay. It was very cheap and it has the gimmick on the outside (elastic around the edge). Even when it's inside the bottle you can blatantly see the elastic band, you can also see the fold.

I read somewhere on the web:
"There are better versions that have the gimmick internal, leaving the edge of the coin untouched. However, these tend to be dearer, so basically you get what you pay for."

Does anyone know where I can buy a high quality folding 10p with the gimmick on the inside?

Thanks!

Please take the time to pop along to the introducions forum and tell us about yourself, level of magical ability, etc. You'll get nothing but messed about if you just jump in like you have done. This isn't an answer forum, but a community.

In general it's wise to steer clear of buying things on eBay unless you're very sure of the quality and validity of the item(s) - we've had several posts here about fakes, copies and second rate items being sold at full price. Scan through the Review section and note where items come from and also check out any of the advertisers at the bottom of the screen, they're all excellent suppliers and offer only good quality items. If you have any problems over their items they will usually be very happy to exchange, sort out or otherwise rectify the problem. As with so many other things, in magic you only get what you pay for and if it's a cheap deal then the quality will be similarly cheap.

Thanks for this, Mandrake. I am sure you are right, and I am willing to pay for a decent coin. My question is - does anyone know where I can get a folding coin with the gimmick on the inside, so that it looks real? I am happy to pay the required amount. I paid £3.50 for the poorly built one. I guess I'd have to pay £20 or even £30 for a good one, which is fine if it's quality!

Thanks!

if i remember correctly one of the "high end" manufacturers of coins (Todd Lassen or Jamie Schoolcraft) do things with internal workings but i cant be sure if they do a folder with it..maybe it was just a flipper coin?

anyways i was having a think about this and an easy answer would be to cover the "workings" with bluetac and simpy go over it with a silver marker. dotn know if it would work as well in reality as it does in my head (as with so many of my ideas *sigh*) but its always worth a go

Not sure why someone in a previous reply says I've 'given the game away' by talking about folding coins! It's obvious that a folding coin is going to have a fold, that's what makes it a folding coin, and mentioning the fact that it might have an elastic band around the outside isn't revealing any secret. As for the fact that such coins exist - most magic websites list 'folding coins'. If manufactureres market them as 'folding coin' rather than 'coin in a bottle' then they've already given the game away completely, so no point trying to keep it a secret on another magic site.

The important thing is not to mention it outside of a magic website, or in the real world.

Thanks the_mog.

I had a look at their sites, looks like very high quality stuff, expensive but probably worth it. However, they seem to be US coins only. Perhaps they will make UK coins if I send them a coin.

Anyone know of anyone in the UK who makes them?

I'm now thinking a £2 coin rather than a 10p as I put a (cheaply made) 10p in a bottle and it didn't actually look very impressive. I think because of something to do with optics, the object in the bottle looks smaller than it actually is. So I think this trick should be done with a really big coin, the biggest that can be made to fit in a bottle (perhaps needs to have two folds).

Try www.magictricks.co.uk for a 10 pence coin. Can't vouch for the quality myself but seems to be good. I'd certainly expect it to be from them anyway.

emagictricks.co.uk offer Coin in Bottle in 10p and 50p versions at £11.99 each plus P&P on http://www.emagictricks.co.uk/default.php?cPath=25_41 . There are a lot of US coins on offer as well but those seem to be the only UK ones.

Thanks for that.

I'm pretty sure that the emagictricks one has the gimmick extarnal, round the edge, even from the very low resolution picture you can see the band!

I couldn't find any on magictricks.co.uk, I did a search.

My feelings are, I'm likely to have to have one especilly made by someone like www.roykueppers.com to make one for me. It would probably cost £100 or more but would probably be amazing quality.

Most of these items, including both the emagictricks ones, are machined externally but the handling should disguise the gimmicking. Just keep it moving and switch it for a normal coin asap.

Roy's English 10 pence costs $17.25 which is about a tenner at current exchange rates so even with P&P is probably still quite affordable.

Certainly affordable though at that price probably it's external.

I want to be able to hand the bottle to people so that they can look at it and shake the bottle. Handling won't help with that, sadly.
Though I wouldn't want them to run off with it if it cost a lot of money.

Or, it would be nice to be able to be able to pop it in with people watching then wander round the bar/pub with it and show it to people and ask them how they think I got it in there! As I say, the one I have, you can see the gimmick, even if the bottle is dark.

An interesting thought: if the bottle was empty or almost empty, it's quite likely that an excited person would run off with it, especially if it was a low denomination coin like 2p or 10, maybe not a problem with a £2 as they may not want to steal your money. A solution to this would be to perform the trick with the bottle full, as to take the bottle they would have to take the drink, and people don't generally go around stealing other people's beer!

I heard about the Butter Coin a while back, and it seemed like a cool little item, it was like a mix of some of the bext gimmicked coins available.

I went to go and buy one and to my surprise I couldn't find it, I can only find half dollar versions.

Does anyone know where I can get the 10p version?

Our colleague MagicDiscoMan made several posts about Butter coin and I'm sure he mentioned a UK coinage version.
