There've been a few discussions about this. Personally, I think this is why you shouldn't do a trick just as it comes out of the packet, because the chances are increasing that some sod somewhere will recognise it and say, "Oh, I saw that on YouTube".
I think buying an effect is just the start. So, don't be afraid to strip it right down to its bare essentials and to build it up into something that's yours. Figure out all the parameters and see what happens when you change them. Hack it, in other words.
I hear you, though, Stephen. I think we should treat the products as raw material and adapt to the threat.
