Paul Daniels chop cup routine

Postby FunkyGibber » Sep 14th, '06, 16:18

Hi guys,

I recently bought a chop cup and a couple of books on the trick. I'm slowly making progress and have developed a few of my own routines.

I remember once seeing Paul Daniels doing a fast and furious version ending in a double large production and have tried to find a video of it on the internet. Putfile once had it on there, but it has been removed.

Does anybody know where I might find a video of him performing this fabulous trick?

Cheers in advance,
Ste.

Not a lot of Paul's stuff has survived on video but one or two occasionally crop up on Youtube which Paul himself has mentioned on his website www.pauldaniels.co.uk.

Best place to see this routine is live (I saw him at the end of August!) and he's at the Ipswich Gala Evening next month (hint, hint!) but his other bookings are on his website as well. Failing that, e-mail him and ask - he usually replies after a few days depending where he's jetted off to. You'll need to tailor the routine to your style as it never works to use everything from another performer's routine.

I absolutely agree. I'm definitely trying to develop my own style. I'm just keen to see that version again. It's such a classic trick that most famous magicians will have performed it at some point and I'm enjoying seeing their own routines and treatment.

Haven't thought of asking Paul himself, but I think I will. Heh, he may even want to see my version on youtube when I get it up there...maybe, but probably 'not a lot'. Sorry, couldn't resist!

When I saw Paul's act last month, instead of the usual double load at the end, for various reasons he did just one final reveal. Even so, it still got the expected roar of surprise and applause - and this wasn't for magicians but for normal cabaret punters. I've seen that routine live three or four times now and I still can't fix the sequence in mind, he shoots through the last bit so swiftly that it all blurs into one gobsmacking effect. I guess that's what happens after a lifetime of practice and performance!

Does this inlcude all of his BBC1 TV shows? I love to see those again, and have wondered many times why these haven't been released on dvd.

Paul Daniels Chop Cup

Postby Allen Tipton » Oct 16th, '06, 14:04

:) No,it's not his TV shows, the Edinburgh dvd is simply that; a performance in Edinburgh.
I still have several of his TV shows on tape, including Chop Cup in 1983, some of the Specials( as the Halloween) & the six Secrets progs.
I also made a 4 hour tape of 53 of his routines, including 47 tricks in 4 mins for, I think, the Guiness Book of Records. And no the 47 count as 1 item in the 53. There's only Paul's famous Linking Ring routine with a child missing, but that is on another tape.

That Edinburgh video was dreadful and I couldn't believe how badly Paul had deteriorated from when I last saw him. And the chop cup was far too fast. He never used to do it that way.

I suppose you get to rest on your laurels when you become a big star. And you get crappier as you get older. I have seen it happen to many a performer.

Perhaps getting out when you are on top is the way to go................

We saw Paul do this last Sunday at Ipswich and it was superb - far better than when he used to do it on TV.

Then hopefully he has been practicing since Edinburgh.

I believe he performs this to the paying public several times a week, so certainly plenty of performance practice, but each time it's subtly different simply because of the audience reactions and the spectator he's working to.

I have always been an admirer of Paul Daniels but I haven't seen him work for years. It was therefore a shock for me to see him on that awful Edinburgh video.

Let us hope that was an aberration and that he is still as good as he ever was.
