Did I miss something or is there something wrong with simply being yourself?
Kirby Vanbirch when and dropped a few thousand bucks a few years ago to have his ears bobbed so he could look like an elf... he now has to hear his hair a bit longer than normal to hide them because he's no longer doing that act... an act that died a horrid death on the Las Vegas strip!
Costumes are great IF YOU ARE AN ACTOR and capable of living up to the image and entity you are thinking of projecting but, 95% of the magic buffs I know HAVE NO ACTING EXPERIENCE e.g. they end up flopping, getting frustrated and developing the opinion that
"that don't work..." when, if they did it right in the first place, it probably could... I know a certain Mr. Goldstein that's come a very long way as the result of his acting and make-up classes long ago; his character has gone from being seen as some kind of B-Rate Movie fright-drag clown to being an actual personality people want to be allied with (a.k.a. Max Maven). So consider these things as you play with the idea of image and character.
Talk to PROFESSIONALS that work in both, the business world as well as theater and get alternate opinions... work with what seems to be the more common scenario of what works rather than trying to find only those that co-sign your own vision.
Given the number of young guys/gals now wearing masks, make-up, special contacts, and outrageous costumes (as well as the street urchant look) just being a normal clean-cut kid with nice clothes & good diction might prove the novelty you need for getting work... god knows it will place you into a much higher income bearing set of opportunities than all the drag ideas being batted around...
