DVD crazy.

Postby londonletmedown » Sep 25th, '06, 17:49

I recently ran into an unexpected check for about 600 dollars (around 315 GBP), and much to my wife's dismay, I'm about to go DVD shopping.

So here's what I need from you: Your favorite card magic DVDs. Your favorite effects, your favorite slights, anything at all regarding card magic.

Go crazy, I'll look em up and get as many as I can. I've been waiting to study from something other than Born to Perform and the Daniel Garcia Project for a long time now :)

I've found it on ebay. What worries me the most is my ability. I've only been doing card magic for about 7 or 8 months, although I practice WAY too much, I'm still no expert.

I know most basic slights, the pass, top palming, etc. But from what I've read Derren's material is more for the advanced student.

Correct me if I'm off base.

It's still being made. I think they've stopped printing his books though.

Yes, but by the sounds of it with a little work you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting it down.

it doesn't matter how long you've been doing it but how much you practice and how much experience you have.

I'm well aware. Moreso I'm concerned that Derren doesn't teach the slights used, but rather assumes common knowledge. I'm not sure that I have all the knowledge he assumes I do. Regardless, I've got money to blow :)

Any other suggestions?

Derren does assume you know them, but in case you don't, he show's you them breifly.

If you're a beginner then get something like the 'Royal Road to Card Magic' DVDs, or 'Born to Perform' is also always being reccommended here, get those basics down because their usefulness can never be underestimated.

More advanced trick DVDs like Jay Sankey's stuff is usually good, (and well taught too although the man himself is a bit annoying).

I can reccommend his 'Anytime, Anywhere' Impromptu magic DVD, it's good value and i learned heaps from it.

Personally I really liked Bill Malone's "On the loose"... no breakthrough magic there or any thing like that, but you get a lot of different strong effects (not only cards, but mostly cards) with a really good magical and comical base to them.

I recently got David Forest's Trickery DVD and I'd recommend that. I found the slights he taught great! The tricks he teaches are great and there are a few things he does which show how much you can really get away with!
