Hello everyone

Hello everyone,

I'm somewhat new to all of this. My twin brother, Kolisar, has been doing this since we were about 10 and I learned a few things from him back then. Now that we're both much older and have been doing other things, I've decided to get back into it after he told me he's back into it.

He knows WAY more about this stuff than I do, so don't get us confused. I'll be happy to answer questions, but I doubt that many of my answers will be of any real value. I'll be the one asking questions.

My interests in magic are cards and coins -- no gaffes. Ideally I'd like to be able to borrow someone else's stuff and have fun with them.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Just out of curiosity, what is the picture that you and your brother share? I have seen it in other palces on the net but have no clue what it is.

Delude, it's a glider...

Postby querist » Oct 24th, '06, 03:23

Delude,

The really short answer:

It's a computer science thing.

The slightly longer short answer:

It's an AI / emergent behavior computer science thing.

The long answer:

That image is called a "Glider" and it is actually a self-sustaining configuration from the cellular finite automata simulation known as "Conway's Game of Life" (Not to be confused with the game "Life"(tm) by Milton Bradley)

The glider is interesting in that it demonstrates an unusual emergent behavior. Each of the black spots represents a live cell in the grid. The glider configuration actually moves around the grid and is indefinately self-sustaining as long as it does not collide with something else. This is quite unusual in this type of cellular finite automaton.

Kolisar and I both work in the computer field.

If you want a more detailed explanation, please feel free to send me a private message. This is not an AI / Computer Science board, so I don't want to go into the details here. I'll be happy to explain it, though, if you like.
