At my high school, I spend my lunch hour performing magic. This has been a lot of fun and is great because there are two other magicians at the school. We usually get together in front of a crowd and one guy does an effect followed by the next. The problem is, some people like the magic a little too much. One guy from my class in particular. He has decided to go on the internet, "learn some tricks", and become some kind of magic teacher. So far, he has already given away the back palm with cards and the classic palm with coins. What is really dumb is that he is HORRIBLE at performing both of these sleights. For his classic palm, his hand practically makes a fist, and for his back palm, about two inches of the card (wich he places into the b.p. possition with his other hand) stick out between his fingers. The good thing is that he teaches the classic palm so badly that people don't even catch it when I do it, and I don't use the back palm anymore. But I still need help. What can I do to prevent this moron from ruining the art of magic?

Have a word with the guy. Maybe you can welcome him into your magic group and help him to appreciate magic as an art. He is obviously very impressed with you, and wishes he could do what you do. It seems that he likes the magic (or maybe its the attention you get as a result) and feels that he can entertain people by exposing the secrets instead.

So yeah i think you should try to welcome him into your group and change his ideas about magic. Remember he probably doesn't think he is doing anything wrong.

Hmmm. You right. That is probably the safist thing to do to keep him from exposing any more secrets. I don't have a problem with people trying to become magicians (we were all one of thouse people at some time or another) I just can not stand it when people who know nothing about what they are talking about decide they a quallified to be teaching others. Edspecially if it isn't something that is supposed to be taught publicly. The guy is pretty clueless, so he might not think he is doing anything wrong, but is he ever anoying....

Whatever you do - don't tell him that he's c*** (not the best)! People often respond best to some encouragement so perhaps think about how you will approach him. Give a few compliments, talk to him about his thoughts toward magic, tell him about yours, including your thoughts on exposure and then offer to help him out a bit with some friendly advice on how to improve.

End by telling him that you will only continue to help him if he keeps what he's shown a secret. It might be just what he needs.

I hope you are right. Thankfuly, he did not reveal anything today, so maybe it is a "phase". If he looks like he is about to start revealing something, I will take your advise and hope that it works! What "tips" do you suggest that I give him? I don't want to tell him about any sleights, because if he "teaches" that, its about half a dozen of my effects down the drain. Maybe I'll teach him something from Scarne on Card Tricks.

or head into tricks like STS or fraud... actully no, cause i've been doing it at school and more and more people are desperately trying to find it on the internet. but yeah, go talk to that guy and see what happens

i dont know what it is, but i have never had people go and look up effects.

well i had one, but after that, he became a student of the art. other than that, every one has enjoyed it enough and didnt even bother to try and find it.

do you tell them the effects name, or tell them you got them from a dvd on the net or something. you all must be doing something different. I keep hearing stories like this and i cant relate or help since you dont always tell the full story, and i know it isnt possible to remember everything you say or do.

i performed every week for my theater tech class for about 30 -50 minutes. A class of about 35 students.

and i did cards and cash effects. even the hummer.

i guess you need to find a different group of people to show effects. find a more mature audience. just an idea.
