Wey Hey!

My copy of Derren Brown's new book "Tricks of the Mind" arrived just now.

With a quote from the sainted Charlie Brooker on the front cover ("clearly the best dinner-party guest in history - he's either a balls-out con artist or the scariest man in Britain."), I'm expecting a lot.

Expect a review in the fullness of time!

hmmm, im guessing though that i won't really do what it says though...

"This extraordinary book lifts the lid on the deepest darkest secrets of magic and explores the limits of what can be achieved by the human mind"

i hope I'm wrong, well, kind of...this is his first book for normal public release isn't it, so he's not going to reveal much is he?

still, he writes very well regardless - should be very entertaining and slightly offensive to pious people... :D which is always a good thing..

It's really a book about belief more than anything. If I say he explains things but doesn't reveal them, I think that'll have to suffice until I've waded through the 350+ pages, but it's not Pure Effect forthe layman..

It's on the shelves at Waterstones and Border bookshops but you can get it from Amazon as well.

i got this yesterday and it is a very good read so far - a whole chapter on dropping a coin into your lap! lol

and it also has a section on hypnosis and suggestion - imho that chapter is worth the price of the book!

(In the intense blackness of the night lit only by a flickering, and foul smelling candle made with ingredients from places even the brave dare not visit, Mandrake carefully selects the small wax effigy which bears an uncanny yet warped resemblance to Chris, pauses just long enough to savour the ecstasy of the moment and then plunges the first of several wickedly designed spikes into the doll. An evil, demonic leer creeps across his face as he chooses another spike and considers the next point of attack. It will be a long but ultimately satisfying night.....……)

I have to agree with Blapsing - I agree that so far it's a very entertaining read. As you've detailed and despite such a simple trick, I really enjoyed the way in which Derren has picked apart the psychology of the performance and explained just why it works better in some ways more than in others.

Thoroughly recommneded!

(In response to Mandrake's post, Chris' (just made up this second) identical twin brother shrieks and screams while he watches and laughs at his "luck" ;))
