Postby Thewayniac » Oct 24th, '06, 11:47

Hi all

I have had a letter through the post from uk coin distributors saying that all uk coins are going to be phased out and replaced with new designs, does anyone know this to be true. they are selling 88p for £3.50 in a display case. if it is true,i gotta whole lot of coins to buy.

Check with The Royal Mint at information.office@royalmint.gov.uk and see what they have to say about it. My initial reaction is that this is just some way of trying to get you to buy 88p's worth of uncirculated coins for £3.50. What's the name of the firm who sent the offer? Names like Franklin Mint and so on are quite common but are nothing to do with The Royal Mint.

It sounds to me like they are trying to sell our common 88p for £3.50

One common 50p
One common 20p
One common 10p
One common 5p
One common 2p
One common 1p

88p..

Thats a blatant rip off IMO. How many people will fall for that? surely the news would be the first to get hold of it if it was legit?

Proof and special finish sets can be far more than that - the Royal Mint itself sells sets at well over £50 a time.

Of course, i agree. My wife use to work at the post office and she told me a thing or teo about stamp and coin collectors

But are they selling uncirculated coins for £3.50 ( i.e the ones due 'to be released' ) or are they selling the coins currently in circulation for £3.50 ( i.e 88p as it is now )

maybe I misunderstood but surely if there was word of this it would be more widespread than leaflet circulation?

My old Granny told me to take up stamp collecting 'cos, as she said, 'philately will get you everywhere'. Sorry.

I've looked at those Brilliant Uncirculated Special Finish Proof sets which sell at £75 or so and, apart from that fact that they're very shiny and in a nice box, I can't see the attraction. As you rightly say, if the design of the coins was radically changing, we should know in plenty of time. It’s a bit like when the old 10p and 5p coins were reduced in size. That episode made it impossible to carry on using American tricks suitable for quarters and old UK 5p coins. Bummer!

Don't get me wrong.. me and my wife are stamp collectors ( in secret ) and we dont droole over them at the counter.. shove em in a keep sake box and wait 50 years till your too old to spend the money they are worth!! There's always your kids..

I wasnt into magic back then. when they reduced the sizes of the coins it just meant I lost more money!!!

What part of Bham are you from? I lived in Birmingham for the last 26 years until August 06
