Mene-Tekel Deck

Postby gunnarkr » Nov 5th, '06, 02:30

Hey all!

I recently bought a Mene-Tekel Deck from a magic dealer in Newcastle upon Tyne. The information that came with the deck are not many pages, if you catch my drift. So I was wondering if any of you have seen a book, booklet, pamphlet, website, DVD or a VCD showing a few different versions of magic tricks with the Mene-Tekel Deck?

The deck is very clever and no problem to make a few different tricks using it. One of the ones I thought of is that you have a spectator point to a card in the deck. You cut the deck where the selected card is, set the deck on the table, show the selected card in your hand to the spectator and put it in your shirt or jacket pocket, and show your hands empty. Then you snap your fingers and the card has jumped from your pocket to the top of the deck. This is just something I came up with while playing around with the deck. :D

Hugard's Encyclopedia of Card Tricks has a chapter of tricks using the Mene Tekel deck as well as chapters devoted to other common gaffed decks. It's actually got a lot of great effects in it and is an unjustly overlooked book. I think you'd find some interesting stuff in there.

Actually, I've just gone and checked the book and although there's a chapter devoted to the deck it's a short one. There are about seven briefly described effects though and there are ideas that you can develop for other effects. I still recommend this book.

Ah, thank you so much Charles!

I have to look around for the Encyclopedia. The Mene-Tekel Deck is actually quite a clever little deck and can leave the spectator completely speachless. I tried it today on a family member and it works wonderfully :)

I got encyclopedia of card tricks for about £1 from a second hand book shop, with no clue how good it was (or that it was by Hugard). I recommend it. :D

It's also on The Learned Pig for free, as it is now in the public domain.
