Deck Longetivity

Postby I.D » Nov 10th, '06, 14:40

Hey folks

I just wondered how quickly you go through a pack of cards..? Just 2 Weeks ago my computer table where I currently sit to practice ( not having a suitable table to sit at yet in my new house ) there was one solitary brand new deck..

Now today there are 8 grimey well used, bent decks.. in 2 weeks!!

I wash my hands every 1 hour of the day.. almost. But I use the deck constantly.. always practing, cuts shuffles flourishes, slieghts etc.. about 7 hours of the day I practice while going about my daily life.

Obviously this is quite costly to go through cards so quickly.. I messed up a deck that was only opened yesterday!!

Is there any way to help a deck last longer.. besides washing with antibacterial soap etc which I already do..>>??

I wouldnt mind so much if I made money from it..

Inject botox into your hands to paralyse sweat glands :P

If it's sweaty hands causing the problem then go to chemists for some ANHYDROL FORTE - an aluminium anti perspirant to stop excessive sweating.

Otherwise LOL use latex gloves PMSL!! :P :P

I dont sweat much at all really.. I only wash my hands so much as I was advised to in Xtreme Beginners DVD.

Generally I think its because I play with cards non stop.. even now while I type one handed Im doing charlier cuts!! :D

I just dont put the cards down, always practicing.. natural oils in my hands maybe??

How long it takes for me to ruin a deck depends on what I practice most at the moment, of course. If I'm trying any XCM moves where the cards surely will sweep the dust off my floor I sometimes use and older deck for it, otherwise it takes a couple of days for a brand new deck to lose it's quality. I usually have three decks opened (Bee's, Bikes and Tally's) using the one which feels right at the moment, Bikes and Tally's last about 1-3 weeks for me.

The best sollution to your problem what I can figure is to buy your cards in large stocks, paying less £/deck as you obviously will need alot of decks. And if you ever run out of money, rob a bank or an old helpless lady, dont stop doing magic  !

I have been meaning to post this for a while, but have not got around to it. As many of you may know, it gets pretty cold up here in Canada. Well one day, after practicing some sleights with a 2 month old deck, I left for my hockey game and for some reason, left the cards sitting on my the ledge of my open window. When I got back home, my room was freezing because my window was open. I went over to grab my cards, and the felt cold (obviously). The interesting part of it was that the cards were not only cold, but they felt brand new! That lasted for about a week then they started to wear down again. Now, I alternate between four decks all the time, so my cards last pretty long and the frozen cards wern't in horrible shape to begin with, but they didn't have the fresh out of the pack fell that they had after spending a few hours near an open window. I am going to try putting an old deck in a plastic bag, then putting it into my refridgerator and checking on it in about and hour to see how the cards feel.

Well to be honest, Its not necessarily what stuff you do with cards.

I am heavli into Card Flourishing (or XCM) and do lots of Card Magic, my cards are always in my hands, I use them and use them, and can have some decks last for a couple of months.

Sometimes each deck is different, but usually I find it best to be light handed with a deck of cards, those who have Xtreme Beginners will know that Jerry Cestowski teaches you to hold the deck as little as possible when not doing a move.

Dealer Grip for example, just let the cards rest against your fingers, and your finegrs are completely relaxed, their not holding anything.

Well if its not that then I don't know, I use decks for hours on end and I'm usually fine?

I find that Tally Ho's last longer, from what I've seen. Theyre not expensive either. I find that Bike's run out quick, maybe it's just my imagination.

I would buy bulk packs of cards (Tally Ho's maybe) then atleast you're getting em cheaper at least in the long run.

Well, my far-fetched experement didn't turn out. . Oh well. But I still can't figure out why my cards that were left by my window felt so good.

I had the same problem (not as quickly though) in about 4-5 days my decks would loose their smoothness with flourishes and I would have to get a new one. I bough a pack of Master's and Tally Ho Vipers 3 weeks ago, the Master's are still good as new (just "thicker") and the Tally Ho's are like a Bike that is half way used. Master's are only $4 and will probably last you a week+ so you do the math . And the Tally Ho Vipers are nice because they are black+silver(more white than silver though)+red(in the red hald red pipped version).

Good luck,
~David

You can buy Tally Ho's from magicbox.uk cheaperthan bikes. £18 for a box of 12 inc delivery.

I might start using Tally Ho's and just keep bikes to use with any gaffs I may use.

Some one needs to make utility cards in Tally's..

There is a Black Tiger Tally Ho over at E that has a matching gaff deck.

Sorry for the one-liner...(well now two and 3 with my "~David"). Not that it makes a difference.

If there are Cost-cos where you live, you can get a box of 9 bikes for really cheap ($12-14)!
