blaine tricks before he did them,

Postby rvoice100 » Nov 18th, '06, 01:10

ay up chucks,

was just thinking to myself and i have a question for all the magicians pre blaine,

were the effects he used (ie. the Raven, Cig thru coin, coin bite, balducci etc.) available before his specials?

for instance after drowned alive, out came the self tying shoelace, phoneomenom strange travelers etc. these wernt available before, was it the same with earlier tricks?

They probably were but just not very popular of course after Blaine did them (you missed out healed and sealed btw) their popularity soared.

Many of those were around for long time before blaine.
And many were popular before him as well.
Just after him all the little kids wanted to be like him so they go out and get the effects. May though wont stay in magic for very long.

STS was saved just for that, jay wanted to wait.

Blaine is really nothing special. People make him out to be this god, but hes not. Niether is angel. They learned from some of the best, but they are more like houdini with publicity.

I have cig thru a coin, cig bite, and homemade raven (given to me by a magician friend when i was really young, too young to fit it). all far before anyone really knew who blaine was.

I agree to some extent. Whenever someone comments about David Blaine and asks how good he really is, I simply reply by stating...

"His MAGIC is just some basic steet style tricks, but I respect him for his tests of physical stength. I mean, who among us has the bawls to stand on a pole for two days, or be frozen in a giant ice cube for 40 hours."

As for Criss Angel, my oppinion still stands that he is one of the greatest magicians of our modern generation. Who else has won Magician of the Year three times, or risked their life in a Live or Die stunt over 20 times! But, I do agree that they are both similar to Houdini (as far as stunts go).

Self tying shoelaces DID exist, but not in the 'mainstream'. Phoneomenon is nothing short of common sense, but using clever camera misdirection and not showing the 'full' effect, Blaine was allowed to make it look more of a miracle than it is.

Strange Travellers has been around in forms for ages, probably a hundred years. It's simply been streamlined, and re-born for/after the show.

You'll find that nothing in magic is really 'new'. Except of course some of the more technological stuff. But even then, most of it just finds tidier ways to perform old classics.

Cigarette thru quarter has been around for ages, and is the copyright of Pressley Guitar (yeah, that's his real name!) who is a notable among many magicians for his gaff coin products—I know that his name and patents go back years.

And as for the Raven, I'm afraid all Mr Blaine did for Mr Leach's effect is give hundreds of bedroom magic dabblers the key to one of magic's little secrets. And as far as I gather (Magic Cafe I think) Mr Leach is not a happy bunny about it!
