I have been interested in learning how to do magic for years, but never really new where to begin. I have been working on the card matrix as a start, but was wondering what to do to really get started. If anyone could reccomend some books or websites or something to help learn how to do some cool yet simple tricks to get me started I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help!

Welcom to TM - it would be good if you could visit the Introductions area and tell us a bit more about yourself. As for hints and tips for starting Magic, there are lots of threads on his topic and they're full of advice about books, DVDs and basic tricks to start with. Check out the Search Function at the top of the page and have some fun trawling the TM library!

I'd always recomend Mark Wilsons Copmplete Course in Magic. It'll give you a good grounding in lots of different areas of magic which you can then take forward as you like.

First of all think about what it is you want to do. Where you will be performing the magic and why. Basically, you need to create a character that you will play. Even if all you want to do is learn some tricks to impress your friends you need to have a sort of 'storyline'. Imagine yourself as you will appear to others watching you perform magic and ask yourself how would they describe you.

This may sound like strange advice but unless you plan out what you want to achieve with magic you run the risk of becoming that guy who buys a lot of magic stuff off the internet. His audience are typically his friends and family and they become less and less impressed by each trick they see.
