Of course messup happens. I have a quite informal style without pretense, so in my recollection messing up has never been a big problem (or if it was ever a problem I have luckely forgot the incident by now).
One time I messed up (strictly speaking it was a spectator who messed up my effect) it lead to the creation of a new effect that I still perform!!
The incident happened when I was performing an effect I invented (based on some quite clever ideas I am not sure are yet in print). I have constucted two versions of the effect and I might at some stage release the version that uses gimmiced cards. I am not using that version, but the gimmiced version is easier to perform.
I will not describe the effect, just mension that one card is signed on the back (by me), while a dublicate of the card remains unsigned.
I was supposed to turn the card signed on the back, but by mistake I turned the wrong unsigned card. As far as the effect is concerned this is a clear messup. However, I found the signed mate and after a bit of fumble with the cards I was ready for a simple D/L that created the illusion that the unsigned card became signed on the back by pure magic. The fact that the spectators already saw me sign a card on the back did not really matter.
In the eyes of the spectators I simply were able to transfer the signature to the card the spectator just "thought" of in front of their eyes.
I still remember how the spectators were sitting examining the signed card and wondering how on earth I got the signature transfered to it!
In short the messup helped me design another effect that is pretty strong and that I occationally perform!
Magic is slight of mind!
