Hi from Oxford

Postby Soren Riis » Nov 30th, '06, 23:44

I just learned about this forum from fellow magicians at the International Magic Convention at the Shaw Theatre last weekend in London.

Sorry that I use my real name! But, like most of us I do not mind standing out!

I am original from Denmark and I was member of the magical circle in Aarhus. I am a semi professional close up (card) magician. Magic is not my main occupation, but I am occasionally paid to perform.

My strongest effects are usually supported by a table :D
I am still working on a repertoire for untabled situations that suit my style.

I have performed a few times at dinner parties (e.g. Colleges in Oxford). My current repertoire is a bit "slow going" but I think it is very magical. I hope this forum can help me develop a faster and more flashy style that is more geared for peoples need for fast gratification and pure entertainment.

I also like mentalism and when I perform table hopping I like to begin with an effect I think is called "one in a million" where spectators call out digets (a little rabit help randomize the choise of spectator) and lo and behold the sum of four numbers inside an envolope (keept by a spectator from before the show) adds up the the numbers constructed by the audiense. Besides that I include a few gags etc.

Hi, I'm like you in that most of my routines need a table. I'm just finishing off putting together an all standing routine though.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.

Moodini, yes I am currently working on an untabled repoitoire, and I might need your help and advise at some stage!

One interesting exercise is to go over some of the great famous tabled routines, and try to make untabled and faster and flasier versions for untabled performance!

I think that it often is possible to construct a resonable untabled version of the effect.

What about a fast version of Curry's classic OOTW that does not require a table! This effect is usually not part of my effects (except sometimes if the right occation occurs after my routines). I have some ideas, but so far my versions require to much fiddeling with the cards! Maybe, its possible to construct a version that suits the demand for fast and entertaining magic.

Wikipedia contains an explanation of OOTW. This is pretty tasteless!

Helidos, rart at der er danskerer på listen! (Helidos, nice there are Danes on the list)

Hi Gunnar,

Godt, at mødes igen!. Jeg var ikke sikker på at gunnarkr var dig!

The previous sentence was written in Danish a language very different from Islandic. Its just that Gunnar speaks Danish fluently....

You should take a look at the version of OOTW that Paul Harris has published. It's called Galaxy and is alot smother and faster. Makes more sense to the spec too.

It's in his Art of Astonishment books.

I thought that one needed a table to perform Galaxy, but actually I am a bit uncertain about which version of OOTW is called Galaxy. But, I think you need a table for Galaxy?

Anyway, nice if Galaxy is faster as long as it is as magical. When I do OOTW I include a few very nice settleties (not quite sure who to credit for these), but I think at one the ideas is by Falkenstein. This way the effect is more intertaining. To speedup the effect one can just use fewer cards - maybe 8-10 in each colour. However, it is important not to rush the effect, since it is important to keep it fairly slow to preserve the strong magic.
